Box Score OMAHA, Nebraska--With four Wolverines scoring in double digits, the Utah Valley University women's basketball team defeated Omaha 74-59 on Tuesday at the Baxter Arena.
The Wolverines (7-6) were led by
Mariah Seals with 13 points,
Karlee Norris with 12 points, and
Taylor Gordon and
Sam Loggins with 11 points each. Freshman
Quynne Huggins had a breakout eight points, while senior
Patrice Toston chipped in six points.
Georgia Agnew tallied five points, a team-high seven rebounds and a team-high six assists. Loggins and Seals each had four assists.
Rebecca MaWhinney also had five points and six rebounds, while
Deijah Blanks added three points and five rebounds.
Utah Valley shot a 48.4 percent clip from the field, and 52.9 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-17). The win busts a five-game slump for Utah Valley.
Mikaela Shaw led Omaha with 20 points and eight rebounds, and was the only Maverick to score in double digits.
"This was just a good collective effort from the team overall. Everyone that went in got a rebound, everyone that went in got a basket, every member of our team played well and played together today," head coach
Cathy Nixon said. "This was a great road win for us after finals, and is the perfect send-off for the Christmas break. Our more experienced girls played consistently and were able to shoot from the perimeter, and that opened opportunities for our younger athletes to step up and find shooting options, it was a great collective effort."
Seals hit a three-pointer in the second quarter that kicked off a 14-0 run, for a 19-point Utah Valley lead (32-13). The Mavericks (7-5) scored just eight points in the second period.
In the third quarter, MaWhinney, Seals and Gordon hit three's on back-to-back possessions for a Wolverine lead as high as 28 points with a score of 51-23.
The Mavericks rallied back with eight unanswered points and cut the Wolverine lead to 14, but would get no closer as Utah Valley ran again 14-3 to keep their comfortable lead.
Of Utah Valley's 74 points, 40 came from inside the paint, compared to Omaha's 18 points inside the key. The Wolverines shared 17 assists and had just six turnovers on the night.
Utah Valley will return home to host Idaho State on Dec. 29 in the UCCU Center, and UC Davis on Dec. 31 in the PE Building.
