NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Cal State Northridge starter Rayne Raven stymied Utah Valley University, striking out 16 batters in a 6-0 win for the Matadors at the CSUN Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Raven, making his first start for the Matadors (3-0) after transferring from Western Nevada, struck out the side in the first, fourth and fifth innings. He allowed just four hits in his seven-inning, 117-pitch outing.
Patrick Wolfe tossed six solid innings for the Wolverines (0-3), allowing two earned runs (three total) while striking out six Matador hitters.
Seth Rhineer had two of Utah Valley's seven hits on the day with freshman
Kody Moon collecting his first career hit in a pinch-hit role in the ninth inning.
Â
CSUN scored three runs in the third, with the first three batters reaching base via a walk, single, and a bunt single. The runs came in on a throwing error, a sacrifice fly, and an infield single.
Â
Chester Pak doubled home a run in the seventh to give Cal State Northridge a 4-0 lead. The Matadors would add two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. CSUN finished with nine hits with Pak and Ryan Raslowsky collecting two apiece.
Â
Raven's 16 strikeout performance is the most for a single pitcher against Utah Valley in its NCAA Division I era. The 17 strikeouts overall also matches a school record for most times struck out for a UVU team.

The Wolverines finish the four-game weekend on Sunday against Gonzaga at 11 a.m. MT/10 a.m. PT. The Bulldogs won the season opener for both teams on Friday, 3-2.
