ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Danny Beddes pitched eight strong innings as Utah Valley University opened the Lobo Invite with a 3-1 win over San Francisco on a cold Friday afternoon.
The Wolverines (2-6) got all three of their runs with two outs in the fifth inning on a
Greyson Bogden RBI double and a
Zac Fuller a two-run single. Beddes (1-2) struck out seven while allowing just one run on three hits.
"Danny pitched very well in extremely tough weather conditions," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "It was good to see our hitters have some better at bats and be able to knock in runners in scoring position. I thought our guys did a good job staying in it all game and played well."
San Francisco starter Anthony Shew (0-2) retired the first 13 Wolverine hitters he faced before
Jordan Schlehuber singled with one out in the fifth. Three batters later, with two aboard and one out, Bogden hit a ground rule double, scoring Schlehuber from second. Fuller then followed with his two-RBI base hit through the left side, giving Utah Valley a 3-0 lead.
The Dons (0-9) got a run in the top of the sixth and threatened for more, putting two in scoring position with two outs, but Beddes got Jack Hall to ground out to
Spencer Gothberg at first to end the inning.
Kyle Valgardson pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save for the Wolverines, striking out a pair including Matt Sinatro, who stood as the potential tying run, to end the game.
Friday's contest was pushed back two hours from its originally scheduled time due to weather and also forced a change in the rest of the weekend's schedule. San Francisco will face host New Mexico beginning at 11 a.m. MT on Saturday, moving both Utah Valley games later than their original start times.
The Wolverines and Dons will play 30 minutes after the completion of the day's first game and UVU and New Mexico will end the Saturday triple header 30 minutes following the middle contest.
