BELLEVUE, Wash. – Brian Olson's 13th-inning, walk-off home run sent Seattle University past Utah Valley University, 9-8, on Friday night at Bannerwood Park in the WAC opener for both teams.
The Wolverines erased an early 6-0 deficit, tying the game twice including with two outs in the ninth on an RBI single by
Jake Atkinson to force extra innings. After that, neither team scored until Olson led off the 13th with the home run to straightaway center field, ending the first extra-inning game of the year for both teams.
"It's disappointing to lose this game but I saw a fight in our team we haven't had in some time. I hope that despite the loss, we're able to bring that type of intensity to the park every day and if we do the wins will come," said head coach
Eric Madsen.
The game last just over four hours and also included a rain delay in the top of the 10th that lasted nearly 50 minutes.
Marco Briones took the loss after giving up the home run, but was among four Wolverine relievers to keep Seattle off the board over the final five innings prior to Olson's game-ending hit. Briones pitched 2.1 innings while
Braden Poole,
Kyle Valgardson and
Hunter Smith combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings to help send the game to extra innings.
"Marco really did a nice job pitching out some tough jams. He was in a tough spot and needed to eat up some innings for us. I was pleased with a lot of those guys out of the bullpen," said Madsen.
Seattle U (8-13, 1-0) led 6-0 just two innings into the game after putting five on the board in the second, taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter in the inning.
The Wolverines (4-17, 0-1) erased that deficit with two in the fifth – two errors allowed two unearned runs to score – and four more in the sixth. The sixth began with back-to-back singles from
Jordan Schlehuber and
Craig Brinkerhoff, and after a balk moved both runners up,
Tate Harding blooped a single to right to plate Schlehuber.
An Atkinson ground ball drove in Brinkerhoff;
Spencer Gothberg reached on a bunt single; and
Zac Fuller drove in his second run of the game with a groundout to make it 6-5. The Wolverines then tied it with a two-out RBI bunt single from
Seth Rhineer, scoring Atkinson.
Griffin Andreychuk hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to give Redhawks the lead right back before an RBI triple by Brian Olson in the seventh made it 8-6.
An error allowed the Wolverines to get a run back in the eighth before Atkinson's RBI base hit in the ninth.
The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. PT start with Sunday's finale slated for noon PT.
