BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Utah Valley University notched a WAC series win, holding off CSU Bakersfield, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field. The Wolverines had four extra-base hits on the day with three triples and a solo home run from
Mark Krueger.
Three different Utah Valley (7-19, 3-3) relievers combined to allow just two hits over the final 4.1 scoreless innings.
Hunter Smith (1-0) got his first career win while
Kyle Valgardson tossed 3.0 scoreless frames and
Eric Olguin pitched the ninth to earn his second save.
"To get a series win on the road in league play is big for us," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "We missed chances to gain some breathing room and need to find a way to get those key hits, but we were able to make the pitches and plays when we needed them."
Both teams missed chances to score in the first two innings, stranding runners in scoring position. The Roadrunners (13-14-1, 2-3-1) left the bases full in the first after leaving 15 on in Saturday's game.
A pair of triples in the top of the fourth helped the Wolverines strike first.
Spencer Gothberg led off the inning with a triple to left-center and would later score the game's first run on a passed ball.
Craig Brinkerhoff had the inning's other triple, scoring
Greyson Bogden to give UVU a 2-0 lead.
Krueger's home run, his first of the season, came on a no-doubter to right and gave Utah Valley at 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth.
CSU Bakersfield got a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the fifth, the second from David Metzgar scored a run and made it a 3-1 game.
The 'Runners threatened in the ninth, attempting a two-out rally with a base hit and a walk, but Olguin got Jordie Hein to line out softly to Bogden at short to end the game.
The Wolverines finished with nine hits, two each from Krueger, Brinkerhoff and
Seth Rhineer. Of the nine hits, four went for extra bases including three triples. CSUB finished with eight hits; Metzgar led the way with four. Nick Rogowski (2-2) took the loss for the 'Runners. He lasted 8.0 innings and struck out eight while giving up three runs on nine hits.
Utah Valley hosts Chicago State in a three-game WAC series starting Thursday at Brent Brown Ballpark in the first home league series of the year.
