Â
"We are looking forward to a fresh start in seeing ISU," head coach
Nikki Palmer said. "They are always a good team and we look forward to a strong competition."
Â
Tuesday's contest will come on the heels of suffering a three-game sweep by the hands of Western Athletic Conference foe Grand Canyon in Phoenix over the weekend. Despite slugging out six home runs in the three games, UVU (16-32, 3-9 WAC) fell by the run-rule in each game, as it was limited to just 13 runs of its own during the weekend series.
Â
Two of the six long balls that UVU hit came from freshman slugger
Jaylen Watson, as the outfielder smacked out both of her home runs in Saturday's finale. With the pair of round trippers, Watson set a new UVU single-season freshman home run record with 10.
Â
Senior outfielder
Erin Romero too had a strong series against the Antelopes as she hit an even .500 with two home runs and five RBIs in the three games. She also added two walks, as she put up a 1.500 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base mark. Junior
Kailey Christensen led the Wolverines from the circle in the weekend series, as she did not allow an earned run in 3.1 innings of relief. Opponents hit just .111 off of Christensen last weekend.
Â
On the season, sophomore
Brianna Gatlin leads UVU in hitting with a .345 average while Watson is right behind her with a .322 clip and a team-best 10 home runs. Fellow sophomore
Bailey Moore paces the team in pitching, as she holds a 10-17 record and a 5.05 ERA.
Â
About Idaho StateThe Bengals will enter Tuesday's game with a 28-14 record and in first place in the Big Sky with an impressive 13-2 league mark. ISU has won six in a row and 12 of its last 13 after back-to-back conference series sweeps over Sacramento State and Portland State.
Â
Kacie Burnett paces Idaho State with a .474 batting average and 29 stolen bases, and Vicky Galasso, who is one of the top power hitters in the nation, is batting .434 with 17 homers and 66 RBIs. Galasso's 66 runs batted in are good enough to rank her third in the country. Ashlyn Ames is ISU's top pitcher, as she'll enter the contest with a 9-4 record and a 2.95 ERA.
Â
Tuesday's game will mark the 37th all-time contest between the Wolverines and Bengals with UVU holding a 21-15 series advantage. ISU did take all three meetings last season, however, including an 8-7 contest in Pocatello a year ago.
Â
Up Next for the WolverinesUVU will return home for its final home series of the season when Missouri-Kansas City comes to town for the final WAC series of the season this weekend. The Wolverines and Kangaroos will play a 2 p.m. contest on Friday afternoon, as well as a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.Â
