OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University came up just short in its attempt at a series win against WAC leader Grand Canyon, falling 4-3 on Sunday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
The Wolverines (13-27, 9-8) put the tying runs on in both the eighth and ninth, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the game and gave the Antelopes (24-19, 13-4) the series win.
"We had opportunities to score runs today but Grand Canyon is a good club and they played great defensively all series," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "Obviously you want to come out on top and hopefully you get the key hit but that's part of baseball. They hit some balls well that we made good plays on and we had guys make big pitches to keep things close so that was good to see."
Grand Canyon jumped ahead 3-0 after two innings, scoring once in the first on a wild pitch and then plating two runs in the second. The Antelopes made it 4-0 in the fifth with a pair of two-out doubles by Brandon Smith and Garrison Schwartz.
Jordan Schlehuber singled home
Spencer Gothberg in the fifth to make it a 4-1 game and get the Wolverines on the board.
In the sixth, with two on and two out, Gothberg doubled to the wall in right-center to bring home
Zac Fuller and
Craig Brinkerhoff and make it 4-3.
Jake Repavich improved to 7-2 in earning the win on the mound for Grand Canyon. Repavich allowed one earned run (three total) on eight hits in 6.0 innings. Cameron Brendel pitched 3.0 hitless innings, allowing just two baserunners – on a walk and a hit by pitch – and struck out four in picking up the save.
UVU starter
Kaden Schmitt lasted 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts but took the loss.
Gothberg accounted for all three of the Wolverines' runs, scoring one and driving in the other two. The loss puts UVU in a tie with Sacramento State in sixth place overall at 9-9 in conference play.
The Wolverines host BYU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before a weekend series against New Mexico State beginning Friday at 6 p.m. in the final WAC home series of the season.
