OREM, Utah – Andy Perkins delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Utah Valley University to a 7-6 win over Chicago State on Friday night at Brent Brown Ballpark. The win clinches the three-game WAC series for UVU with Saturday's finale at 11 a.m. MT.
Perkins lined the ball to left-center with two men on and one out in the bottom of the ninth. The hit scored
Jake Atkinson from second, completing a comeback after the Wolverines (9-19, 5-3)Â trailed 5-0 early. It's UVU's first walk-off win since
Riley White's game-winning single on April 27, 2013, which also came against Chicago State.
"We got a lot of contributions from a lot of guys tonight. I was pleased with how we did as a team. We stayed in it, we didn't panic and did a good job on both sides of the baseball. When you get production throughout the lineup and everybody's putting pressure on good things can happen," said head coach
Eric Madsen.
Zac Fuller was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while
Greyson Bogden and
Spencer Gothberg each had two hits. Gothberg and Atkinson drove in two runs apiece and
Mark Krueger was 1-for-2 and walked three times. Until he was retired in the ninth, Krueger had reached base nine consecutive times in the series.
Kyle Valgardson (1-2) got the win after throwing 5.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen. He struck out three and allowed just three hits.
"Valgardson coming in and pitching that many innings and just controlling things after they had that early lead was very big for us," Madsen said. "Now we've got to come out and find a way to win tomorrow."
Down 5-0 in the third, Utah Valley inched closer with three in runs following a sac-fly from
Kade Andrus and a two-out, two-run triple by Atkinson.
Chase Matheson hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to extend the lead back to three runs for the Cougars (7-21, 1-6).
In the fifth, the Wolverines got a seeing-eye single into center field off the bat of Gothberg to plate two and get UVU within a run. Utah Valley tied it in the sixth on a bases loaded walk, issued to Krueger and scoring
Jordan Schlehuber.
Chicago State threatened in the ninth after Mattingly Romanin led off with a single, but Atkinson nabbed him trying to steal second. Matt Schmidt had three hits to lead the Cougars.
The win clinches the second straight WAC series win for Utah Valley following last week's road series win at CSU Bakersfield. The Wolverines go for their first series sweep of the season on Sunday.
