SPOKANE, Washington – Aaron Meyer's first-half goal held up for Utah Valley University in a 1-0 win at Gonzaga on Friday. The win moves the Wolverines to 6-1-0 on the season with a match up at unbeaten, No. 15 Denver on Sunday night.
Meyer scored on a 12th-minute set piece from just outside the box, putting the direct kick near the upper right 90 for the game-winner. It was the freshman's second career goal.
"I'm proud of our response and resiliency. Gonzaga is a very good team, and a 1-0 result on the road is always special," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Denver will be a true test and an opportunity for the boys. They'll be ready for the challenge."
Behind goalkeeper
Collin Partee, the Wolverines held off several chances from the Bulldogs (3-3-1) in the second half. The last big opportunity came in the final minute on a diving save to the left of Partee.
The shutout is Utah Valley's fourth on the season and the third for Partee, who finished with four saves on the day. His counterpart, Chris Lowrimore, collected seven saves on eight Wolverine shots on goal. Utah Valley finished with 14 shots to Gonzaga's 13.
Sunday's match at Denver (5-0-1) begins at 7 p.m. MT at CIBER Field, one of the toughest venues in the country.
