Utah Valley looks to bounce back at Grand Canyon on Sunday

UTAH VALLEY DROPS WAC OPENER, HEADS TO PHOENIX TO TAKE ON GRAND CANYON
The Utah Valley University women's soccer team looks to bounce back from a loss to CSU Bakersfield in its WAC opener on Friday night as the team continues league play against Grand Canyon Sunday in Phoenix.

Utah Valley (6-5-1) heads into Sunday's match fresh off a 1-0 setback to CSU Bakersfield on Friday night at Clyde Field. The loss snapped UVU's 14-match home unbeaten streak and marked just the third loss at home over the past three seasons. Despite out-shooting CSUB 24-9, UVU could not find the back of the net in the loss. The 'Runners headed in a goal in the 48th minute to secure the win over the Wolverines. Taylor Kirk led UVU with five shots against CSUB, including two on goal. Alexis Peterson, Lexi Felis, Sheridan Fox and Breanna McCarter each tallied three shots. Sarah Davis played all 90 minutes in goal for UVU, tallying two saves on the night.

Peterson leads the Wolverines with five goals and 10 points this season. Abby Jameson and Kirk each own two goals, while eight other Wolverines have each scored at least one goal this season. Freshman Breanna DeWaal leads the Wolverines with 39 shots, including a team-best 13 shots on goal. She also fronts UVU with three assists. Breanna McCarter ranks second on the team with 20 shots. Nielsen leads the team in the box with a 4-2-1 record. She has 38 saves and owns a .864 save percentage on the season.

As a team, Utah Valley has netted 17 goals while allowing opponents just 13. The Wolverines average 14.9 shots a match with a .380 shots on goal percentage. The Wolverines are holding opponents to just a .092 shot percentage while limiting opponents to a 1.08 goals per game average. UVU also holds a 179-141 shots advantage and a 70-51 edge on corner kicks.
 
Sunday's match against the Antelopes will kickoff at 1 p.m. MT, and will be broadcast live at the WAC Digital Network at www.WACSports.com/Watch.

ABOUT GRAND CANYON
Grand Canyon holds a 4-8-0 overall record this season. The Antelopes head into Sunday's match fresh off a 1-0 loss at Seattle U in the team's WAC opener.  GCU didn't give up a goal to SU until the 84th minute. Grand Canyon had 11 shots to Seattle U's 12 with four on target and two corner kicks. Grand Canyon has tallied 17 goals this season while allowing 18. Junior forward Milla Benedetti has scored five of GCU's 17 goals this season. She also leads the team with 32 shots, including a team-best 17 on goal. Benedetti and sophomore forward McKenzie Cook front the team with two assists apiece, while junior keeper Blakely Fraasch leads the team in the box with 32 saves and two shutouts. GCU is coached by Derek Leader who is in his first season with the team.

SERIES HISTORY VS. GRAND CANYON
Utah Valley and Grand Canyon meet on the pitch for the eighth time on Sunday afternoon with Wolverines holding a 5-2-0 all-time series advantage. Utah Valley and Grand Canyon meet in Phoenix for just the fourth time in the two team's history. UVU owns a 2-1 advantage in matches played in Phoenix. The two teams split a two-match series last season with each team winning on its home field. UVU played GCU in a non-conference match on Sept. 26 in Orem with the Wolverines edging out the 'Lopes 2-1 in overtime.

UTAH VALLEY'S HOME UNBEATEN STREAK HALTED AT 14 MATCHES
Utah Valley dropped a 1-0 decision to CSU Bakersfield Friday night in the team's WAC opener at Clyde Field, snapping the Wolverines' 14-match home unbeaten streak. The setback marks Utah Valley's first loss at Clyde Field since falling to Seattle U on Nov. 1, 2014. It also marks just the third loss at Clyde Field over the past three seasons for UVU.

HOME SWEET CLYDE FIELD
Despite its Clyde Field unbeaten streak coming to an end at 14 matches, UVU has enjoyed tremendous success on its home pitch. The Wolverines have lost just three matches at home over the past three seasons, posting an impressive 20-3-4 record. UVU holds an all-time 65-32-10 mark at home since the Wolverines became a Division I member in 2003. UVU went unbeaten at home last season with a 9-0-1 record. The team extended its Clyde Field unbeaten streak to 14 matches with its 2-1 overtime win over Grand Canyon on Sept. 26 before it was halted with a loss to CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 7. The Wolverines ranked 24th (1,074 per game) nationally in attendance at Clyde Field last season. UVU already ranks 12th in the nation in attendance after welcoming an average of 1,397 fans through the gates though three home matches this year.

UVU RANKED NO. 10 IN NSCAA TOP-10 WEST REGION POLL
After falling out of the top-10 NSCAA West Regional Poll last week, Utah Valley has made its way back into the poll.  UVU is ranked No. 10 in this past week's poll after going 1-1-0 last week with a win at home over Grand Canyon and a road loss at Seattle U. The Wolverines have been ranked as high as No. 8 in the poll this season.

UTAH VALLEY'S HOLDS TOP RPI IN THE WAC
After debuting at No. 82 in the NCAA's first RPI release of the season on Sept. 19, Utah Valley now holds the No. 109 RPI rating in the country, according to the NCAA. UVU continues to hold the top RPI in the WAC at 109, followed by Seattle U (142), Grand Canyon (176), CSU Bakersfield (197), UMKC (236), UTRGV (295), New Mexico State (300) and Chicago State (330).

UVU IN THE NATIONAL/WAC STATISTICAL RANKINGS
UVU freshman goalkeeper Brooklyn Nielsen holds the highest individual national ranking on the team as she ranks 30th nationally in save percentage at .864. She also ranks 33rd nationally and first in the WAC with a .675 goals against average. UVU leads the WAC with 62 corner kicks this year. The Wolverines rank second in the WAC in shots (156), and assists (15).

KIRK AND CALLISTER ENTER ALL-TIME UVU CAREER CHARTS
Senior forward Taylor Kirk ranks in the top-10 in three different all-time UVU career statistical rankings. Kirk is tied for fourth all time with six game-winning goals, just two away from the all-time best mark of eight. Kirk is tied for ninth all-time in goals with 13 and ranks 10th all-time in points with 35. Sara Callister is 10th all-time in assists with 10.

UVU OPENS WAC PLAY WITH 1-0 LOSS TO CSU BAKERSFIELD
UVU dropped a 1-0 decision to CSU Bakersfield Friday night in the team's WAC opener at Clyde Field, snapping the Wolverines' 14-match home unbeaten streak. CSUB's Jordin Bartel headed the game winner into the back of the net in the 48th minute after receiving a cross into the box from Aminah Settles. The score marks Bartel's fourth goal of the season. Utah Valley out-shot the Roadrunners 24-9 on the night, including an 8-4 advantage on goal. Taylor Kirk led UVU with five shots, including two on goal. Alexis Peterson, Lexi Felis, Sheridan Fox and Breanna McCarter each tallied three shots. Jen Padilla picked up the win in the box for CSUB as she improves to 5-4-1. Sarah Davis played all 90 minutes in goal for UVU, tallying two saves on the night.

LOOKING AHEAD
Utah Valley travels to play UT Rio Grande Valley on Oct. 14 before traveling to New Mexico State on Oct. 16. UVU's next home match is set for Oct. 20 against Chicago State.
