OREM, Utah--With six Wolverines scoring in double-digits, the Utah Valley University women's basketball team defeated CSU Bakersfield 72-53 behind a season high shooting percentage on Saturday.
Utah Valley shot 56.8 percent from the field, the highest for the team all season. UVU also out-rebounded CSUB 34-to-22, and had 32 points in the paint.
Patrice Toston led the way with 14 points and three steals, while
Georgia Agnew had 13 points and three assists.
Mariah Seals scored 12 points combined with five assists and two steals, and
Deijah Blanks tallied 11 points. Both
Rebecca MaWhinney and
Sam Loggins had 10 points and nine rebounds apiece, and Loggins picked up five blocks on the night.
"Scoring by committee is how this team will be successful. When we execute our offense, and move the ball the way we need too, its impossible to guard all of the options," head coach
Cathy Nixon said. "Our girls really kept their composure and we have an offensive philosophy that when we share the ball we will be successful, it also helps when you make shots."
The victory marks the first time Utah Valley had six scorers in double figures. This is also the second time that the Wolverines have had at least five scorers in double-digits, and the seventh time with four or more Wolverines in double-digits.
The Wolverines ran 8-0 in the first quarter, bookended by three-pointers from MaWhinney and Toston to take a 16-12 advantage. A three from Roadrunner Addi Walters got CSUB within one, and the teams went back and forth before heading into the second quarter with the Wolverines leading 20-19.
Utah Valley opened the second quarter on another 8-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Blanks, forcing a Bakersfield timeout and a 28-19 lead for UVU. The Roadrunners scored just four second-quarter points, with a Batabe Zempare free throw and a Walters three. The Wolverines closed the second quarter on another 6-0 spout to lead 36-23 before the break.
In the third quarter, the Runners could not get closer than 10, down 45-35. Utah Valley led by as many as 17 (58-41), before Batabe Zempare knocked down a free throw to end a string of five missed from the charity stripe for Bakersfield.
Utah Valley extended their lead to 19 at 61-42 when Agnew sank a three-pointer to open the fourth period. A MaWhinney three-pointer put the Wolverines ahead by 23 at 70-47. Bakersfield knocked down two more treys from Walters and Heidi Torres-Rodriguez sandwiched by a Toston layup, sealing the 72-53 victory.
Utah Valley will hit the road next week to see WAC foes Chicago State and Missouri-Kansas City on Feb. 18 and 20.
