Blanks' perfect night leads UVU to 69-62 win at CSU

CHICAGO - Deijah Blanks scored 29 points and set a new school record by hitting a perfect 10-for-10 from the field to lead Utah Valley University to a 69-62 win at Chicago State on Thursday night.

Blanks' line included a pair of 3-pointers and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. She also pulled down 10 rebounds - also a career high - in notching her first career double-double and picked up three steals.

She became the fourth player this season across NCAA Division I to have a perfect night from the floor with at least 10 shots made.

"Deijah really came up big for us tonight," said UVU head coach Cathy Nixon. "A perfect shooting night is a special thing and she came through with one when we needed it. She has become a key player for us who has added a dimension of defense and scoring at both the three and the four. I am really proud of her."

Down a point late in the third, the Wolverines (13-13, 6-5) ran off six straight points over the final three minutes to take a 45-40 lead into the final quarter.

UVU extended its lead to nine, 52-43, on a Karlee Norris free throw with 5:26 left in the game. Blanks later hit a decisive three with 2:13 left -- marking her 10th consecutive make -- giving her 25 points and the Wolverines a 59-51 lead. The Cougars (4-21, 2-9) would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

"This was an important game for us. Although I didn't feel that we played our best game we were fortunate to come away with a win," Nixon said.

Mariah Seals finished with 12 points while Norris added 10 off the bench. The Wolverines hit 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from the field while limiting Chicago State to 36 percent shooting. UVU also out-rebounded the Cougars 35-26.

In the first half, Chicago State raced out to an 11-2 lead and led by six, 20-14, after one quarter. The Wolverines started the second with a 7-0 spurt to take a 23-20 lead before entering halftime tied at 31.

Georgia Agnew chipped in nine points for UVU, Sam Loggins added six and Rebecca MaWhinney finished with three points and five assists. Kaylee Allen and Layne Murphy each scored 19 points to lead Chicago State. Murphy also became the 10th player in CSU history to surpass 1,000 career points.

The win allowed Utah Valley to keep pace with Grand Canyon and remain in a tie for third place in WAC play with just three league games remaining.

Two players shared the previous single-game shooting percentage record: All-American Robyn Fairbanks (2008) and Katie Wilson (2004), who both made 10-of-11 (.909) from the floor.

The Wolverines now head to Kansas City for a match up at UMKC on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT/2 p.m. CT.
