BERKELEY, Calif. – Four straight two out hits helped Utah Valley University break a tie game in the top of the seventh en route to an 8-4 over San Francisco on Wednesday night. The game was played at Cal's Evans Diamond due to USF's field undergoing renovation.
Zac Willis started the rally with a base hit before scoring on a double into the right field corner by
Paul Estrada.
Ryne Edmondson followed Estrada's double with one of his own, and then scored on base hit by Bogden to cap the inning and give the Wolverines (3-2) a 7-4 lead. Seven of UVU's eight runs on the night came after there were two outs.
Five Utah Valley relievers combined to strikeout nine San Francisco (0-6) hitters while allowing just one unearned run on three hits and walking just one.
Greg McCuch (1-0) got the win for the Wolverines while Mack Meyer (0-1) took the loss for the Dons.
Â
"That was a very good win," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "San Francisco was a hungry team and for us to get down early and come back and get key hits and at-bats and get the work we did from the bullpen was great. It was another team win for us and it's great to see early on."
Stone Ramsey led a 16-hit attack with four hits while Willis and Bogden both had three hits. Bogden also homered in the ninth inning for his, and the team's, first of the season. Willis, Estrada and Bogden each had two RBIs for the Wolverines.
Â
The Dons got a pair of home runs in a three-run second inning to take a 3-0 lead early on. The first came from Spanish Fork High School product Brady Bate on a solo home run. Two batters later, Ross Puskarich hit a two-run home run to make it 3-0.
Â
The Wolverines rallied with two outs in the third, getting a two-out walk to
Craig Brinkerhoff and a base hit by Ramsey to load the bases.
Jeff Arens then drew a four-pitch walk to force in
Jordan Schlehuber for UVU's first run. Willis followed with an infield single to score Brinkerhoff, making the score 3-2.
In the fifth, Willis drove home his second RBI, scoring
Mark Krueger to tie the game at 4-4 before Estrada singled home Ramsey for another two-out RBI and giving UVU its first lead.
Â
San Francisco tied it in the sixth with a two-out RBI of its own with Bate scoring on an infield base hit by Ryan Matranga.
Garrett Bowman,
Logan Hold, McCuch and
Patrick Wolfe combined to throw 6.2 innings in relief, striking out nine while not allowing a walk.
Â
The Wolverines stay in the Bay Area for the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament at Santa Clara beginning Friday night against the Broncos.
