PHOENIX, Arizona – For the second straight night Utah Valley University and Grand Canyon University needed extra innings, but on Friday it was the Wolverines who ended on top, 5-4, in 12 innings.
Â
Mark Krueger's RBI single in the top of the 12th served as the winning run and scored
Zac Willis. Willis singled to begin the inning and moved to third when
Greyson Bogden looped a double into the left field corner before Krueger's go-ahead single.
"We found a way to get it done. For them to come back and us to find a way to win is big and shows us what this club is capable of," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "We do need to get better and take advantages of opportunities when they're there. That's what this series has been about so far."
UVU moved to 12-12 overall and 1-1 in the WAC in evening the series while GCU dropped to 12-11 and 1-1 in league play. The rubber match is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. MT/noon MT.
Â
Kyle Valgardson (2-0) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings and got the win for the Wolverines, retiring the side in order in the 12th inning. His night started when he got Paul Pannacione to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the ninth and force extra innings.
Â
Danny Beddes struck out a season-high nine batters, one shy of his career high, and lasted into the ninth but didn't factor into the decision after GCU tied the game. Tyler Wyatt (0-3) struck out five hitters in four-plus innings out of the bullpen for the 'Lopes but took the loss.
Â
With UVU traling 2-1 midway through the contest,
Stone Ramsey hit a go-ahead, two-out, two-run double in the sixth that gave Utah Valley a 3-2 lead. The advantage reached 4-2 in the eighth and held there until Grand Canyon used four singles to tie the game with a ninth-inning rally.
Â
Austin Bull went 4-for-5 to lead Grand Canyon while Ramsey was 3-for-5 for Utah Valley. Bogden, who entered the weekend in the top 20 nationally in doubles, had two doubles and now has 12 on the year
Â
After Saturday's game, the Wolverines return to Utah next week and will play at the University of Utah on Tuesday before a weekend series against North Dakota in WAC play.
