OREM, Utah -- A pair of RBI triples in the seventh inning gave Utah Valley University the lead for good in a 4-2 win over Northern Colorado in the opener of a three-game WAC series on Friday night at Brent Brown Ballpark.
Â
Spencer Gothberg delivered the go-ahead triple on a towering fly ball off the wall in right center. The hit scored
Greyson Bogden, who singled, stole second and then moved to third on a grounder to the right side by
Mark Krueger.
Jake Atkinson later lined the ball to right center for the second RBI triple with two outs in the inning.
Â
Jake Mayer had another scoreless outing of the bullpen – his sixth straight – pitching the final 4.0 innings and allowing just one bloop single while striking out four. Mayer (3-1) won for the second time this week after getting the win on Tuesday against Utah.
"It was a very well-pitched and well-played game on both sides," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "The middle of the lineup swung the bat well for us. Spencer's triple was huge and Atkinson knocking that run in was equally as big. I was really pleased with the pitching. Pat didn't have his best control but was still very good and Jake (Mayer) came in and was lights out for us."
Â
Bogden went 3-for-4 to follow up his four-hit effort on Tuesday and scored three of the team's four runs.
Craig Brinkerhoff added two hits and an RBI for the Wolverines (17-14, 4-3).
Â
Northern Colorado (5-21, 0-4) was limited to just four hits on the day, one of which was a sixth-inning home run by Cole Maltese.
Â
The Wolverines scored in the first when Bogden singled and stole second for his first of two steals on the night. Krueger drove him in with a double off the wall in right to extend his hit streak to 14 games. The Bears tied the game in the top of the second on a two-out, RBI single from Dean Lawson.
Â
The teams traded runs again, with UVU taking a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an infield single by Brinkerhoff before Maltese wasted little time in tying the game, homering on the second pitch of the sixth inning to make it 2-2.
Â
The series continues on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT with
Danny Beddes the scheduled starter for the Wolverines while Alex Werbach is slated to go for Northern Colorado.
