OREM, Utah—UT Rio Grande Valley scored a pair of runs in both the sixth and eighth innings to defeat the Utah Valley University baseball team 4-2 in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Utah Valley falls to 30-21 overall and 15-9 in WAC play, while UTRGV improves to 20-26 overall and 9-12 in league play. Despite Sunday's loss, Utah Valley did pick up the series, winning two of the three games. The Wolverines remain in a tie for third place in the WAC with Sacramento State.

"I feel like we got out-willed today," Utah Valley head coach
Eric Madsen said. "It's always tough to sweep somebody and UTRGV is a good team. We just didn't have the right mindset at the beginning of the game to do what we needed to do to pull off the sweep. I thought some of our guys did some good things and came up with some good at-bats, but we had some miscues on defense and blew some opportunities, which hurt us. Now we have to get our minds right as we head to Chicago State for a series and get ready for the WAC Tournament."

The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as Ramsey, who had reached on a double to right field, scored from third on a wild pitch to give UVU a 1-0 lead.

UT Rio Grande Valley threatened to score in the top of the fourth as the Vaqueros put runners on second and third base with one out. However, UVU's
Jordan Schlehuber got the Wolverines out of the innings with an unassisted double play as he caught a popped up bunt and then beat the UTRGV runner back to third base for the final out of the inning.

The Vaqueros took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning as Manny Loredo singled down the right field line to score both Joseph Collazo and Cole Loncar. UTRGV then extended its lead with two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Utah Valley got a run back in the bottom half of the eighth inning as
Craig Brinkerhoff hit a solo home run over the left field wall to cut the UTRGV lead to a 4-2 advantage. UTRGV then held UVU scoreless through the final inning to secure the win.

Jake Mayer (7-2) led UVU on the mound, working 6.0 innings with five strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander gave up only one earned run and six hits.
Greg McCuch pitched 1.1 innings and
Matt Davidson finished the game with 1.2 innings of work.

Schlehuber led the Wolverines at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the day. Brinkerhoff went 2-for-4 with a run, a home run and an RBI. Ramsey also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored.
Justin Erlandson kept his hitting streak alive at 16 games as the junior reached on a single through the left side in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Utah Valley will wrap up regular season WAC play with a three-game series at Chicago State, May 19-21. The team will then travel to Mesa, Arizona for the WAC Tournament on May 25.
