SPRINGVILLE, Utah – Utah Valley University head women's golf coach
Dr. Sue Nyhus won the Utah Women's Senior Amateur Championship for the second time in the past three years on Tuesday at Hobble Creek Golf Course with a two-round total of 7-over-par 153.
The seventh-year Wolverine head coach recorded scores of 76 and 77 en route to claiming the title. She also finished four shots ahead of her next closest competitors, Annette Gaiotti and Elizabeth Jones, who tied for second at 11-over-par.
During Monday's opening round, Nyhus carded a trio of birdies on the back nine and two more during Tuesday's finial round, including the par-5 18, to seal the championship.
The Utah Valley head coach is no stranger to winning big tournaments during her career, as she is now a two-time Utah Women's Senior Amateur Champion (2016 & 2014) as well as a two-time Utah State Women's Amateur Champion (1999 & 1985). She has also twice been named the Utah Golf Association's Women's Golfer of the Year (1998 & 1996) and once tabbed the UGA's Women's Senior Golfer of the Year (2014).
In 2015 Nyhus achieved something that no other amateur golfer ever has, as she became the first golfer in USGA history to have played at every championship offered to her by the organization (U.S. Girls' Junior, U.S. Women's Amateur, U.S. Women's Open, WAPL, U.S. Senior Women's Amateur, Women's State Team and the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball).
Nyhus, who led her Wolverines to arguably their most successful season in program history last year, and the Utah Valley women's golf team will open their 2016-17 campaign by hosting the Hobble Creek Classic on Sept. 12-13 at Hobble Creek Golf Course.
