WICHITA, Kansas – Utah Valley University fell for the second straight day at Wichita State, dropping a lopsided 16-2 decision at Eck Stadium.
Zac Willis hit his first home run of the season for the Wolverines (0-2) while
Trevor Peterson drove in UVU's second run. The Shockers (2-0) scored multiple runs in four innings, beginning with a six-run second inning rally. WSU added runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and finished with 14 hits on the day while Utah Valley had five.
The six-run second started after there were two outs and nobody on. Seven straight Wichita State hitters reached base in the inning with Josh DeBacker driving home the first two on a bases-loaded single to left. The bases were full again when Dayton Dugas cleared them with a three-run double to left-center. He then scored when Alec Bohm doubled to right on a ball that was lost in the sun.
Three players had three-RBI days for Wichita State: Dugas, Gunnar Troutwine, and Jordan Boyer.
Jake Mayer took the loss for the Wolverines while Cody Lewis earned the win in five innings of work. Senior
Matt Davidson was solid in relief for UVU, striking out three while retiring all six hitters he faced.
Willis' home run – a towering shot to left -- led off the fourth inning. Peterson's RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and brought home
Justin Erlandson.
The Wolverines will look to avoid a series sweep in Sunday's 1 p.m. CT/noon MT finale. The game can be seen on ESPN3.com or the Watch ESPN app.
