Â
ABOUT UTAH VALLEY
The Wolverines will enter the tournament with an 0-4 record on the young season after opening the year with four setbacks at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Feb. 17-19. Despite dropping all four contests, three of the four were one-run decisions, as UVU fell to San Diego (10-9 in eight innings), St. Mary's (2-1) and UC Davis (4-3). The lone other setback of the opening tournament was an 11-3 loss to Cal Poly.
Â
In Feb. 19's tournament finale against UC Davis, UVU's comeback attempt fell just short as it dropped the one run decision to UCD. With the Aggies holding to a 4-0 lead in the last of the sixth inning, the Wolverine offense finally broke through with four hits and three runs in the frame to pull within a run. Utah Valley junior
Kirsten Andersen began the rally with an infield single and senior
Courtney Beavers immediately followed with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Following a strikeout, senior
Brittney Vansway delivered an RBI single to put the Wolverines on the board. Junior
Taleigh Williams then followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half, and freshman
Lyndsay Steverson capped the scoring with an RBI single of her own to make it a 4-3 game.
Â
UVU then threatened in the final inning with a leadoff double from sophomore
Eryn Sustayta, but it couldn't manage to push the tying run across as UCD held on for the 4-3 win.
Â
Beavers leads Utah Valley and the WAC offensively on the season with a .571 average, while the newly named Senior CLASS Award candidate Vansway is right behind her with a .545 clip and a team-high seven RBIs. Junior transfer
Lauren Frailey fronts the Wolverine pitching staff with a solid 1.50 ERA and an 0-1 record in 9.1 innings of work.
