EDINBURG, Texas – Jackson Overlund went 5-for-5 and
Luke Jacketta hit a three-run home run as Utah Valley University clinched its opening WAC series with a 7-4 win at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday night. The Wolverines (7-15, 2-0) won Friday's opener, 4-3, and have won three straight games overall.
Overlund led off the second inning with his WAC-leading 12th double of the season and singled in the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth innings. He also scored two runs and drove in a run while tying the school record for hits in a game.Â
"Jackson was great tonight and it was nice to see Luke's home run, and Eric Olguin came in a did a great job to finish the game" said UVU head coach Eric Madsen. "I thought our guys did a good job of fighting through some difficult situations. We did a better job with two strikes and lengthening out some at bats. We made pitches when we needed to as well and found a way to win the series. We need to come out tomorrow ready to play."
Jacketta's home run was the first of the freshman's young career. He fell behind 1-2 before working the count full, then crushed a pitch over the wall in left center to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead in the second. The home run also scored Overlund and Callahan Moltzan.Â
UVU made it a 5-0 game in the third with
Trevor Peterson and
Trevor Howell, who both walked to begin the inning, scoring runs. Overlund had an RBI single and
Jake Berry drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Â
The Vaqueros (16-10, 0-2) chipped away, getting one run in both the third and fourth before scoring twice in the sixth despite not getting a hit in the inning. UTRGV took advantage of four walks in the inning, scoring runs on a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice, to make it 6-4.
Â
Overlund scored the Wolverines' final run the seventh, coming around from first on a triple by Moltzan.
Â
Three Utah Valley pitchers limited UT Rio Grande Valley to six scattered hits.
Jake Mayer (1-5) picked up the win after pitching into the sixth inning.
Paxton Schultz and
Eric Olguin followed Mayer, each tossing two scoreless innings with Olguin picking up his first save of the season.
Â
Josh Witherspoon (0-2) surrendered five runs on just two hits in 2.0 innings and took the loss for the Vaqueros. Joseph Collazo went 3-for-5 for UTRGV and drove in a pair of runs.
UVU will aim for its first series sweep of the season while looking to stay perfect in WAC play on Sunday. The series finale is slated to start at noon CT/11 a.m. MT with
Kaden Schmitt taking the mound for the Wolverines.Â
