UVU drops front end of double-header to Indiana State, 10-5

OREM, Utah—A four-run ninth inning helped Indiana State secure a 10-5 win over Utah Valley in the first game of a double header on Saturday afternoon at Brent Brown Ballpark.
 
The loss drops the Wolverines to 2-7 overall on the season. Indiana State improves 4-5 on the year.
 
Indiana State got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning after Dominic Bifano doubled down the right field line and then advanced to third on a Kyle Moore single to left field. Bifano then crossed the plate to give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead on a Jeff Zahn fielder's choice.
 
The Sycamores got two more in the top of the third inning after Clay Dungan singled to right field and then scored on a Tony Rosselli double to left. Roselli then crossed the plate on a Dane Giesler single to center to give Indiana State a 3-0 advantage.
 
Utah Valley tied things up in the bottom of the third inning. Trevor Howell reached on a walk before advancing to second on a Trevor Peterson single. Zac Willis then cleared the bases with a three-run shot over the left field wall to tie the game, 3-3.
 
Indiana State went ahead in the fourth inning as J Zahn singled to right and then advanced to third on a Cody Gardner double down the left field line. Dungan then sacrificed Zahn home to give the Sycamores a 4-3 lead. The Sycamores put up another run in the top of the fifth inning after Chris Ayers singled to left and then scored on a Rosselli double to left center field. The run gave the Sycamores a 5-3 lead.
 
The Sycamores recorded another run in the seventh as T Friis reached on a UVU fielding error before crossing the plate on a Ayers double to help Indiana State extend its lead to a 6-3 advantage after six and a half innings of play.
 
The Wolverines responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Howell hit a two-out single to right field and then advanced to second on a throwing error. Peterson then singled to right to send Howell across the plate. Peterson stole second base before touching home on a Willis single to center field, cutting the Indiana State lead to a 6-5 advantage.
 
With one out in the top of the ninth, Rosselli doubled down the left field line and then advanced to third on a Dane Tofteland single. Bifano then singled in Roselli.. Kyle Moore then hit a three-run homer over the left field fence to give the Sycamores a 10-5 lead. Indiana State held UVU scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
 
Peterson and Willis led UVU with 3-for-4 efforts at the plate. Peterson also had a pair of runs with an RBI, while Willis tallied a run with a team-high four RBI. Howell went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs and a walk.
 
Jake Mayer led the Wolverines on the mound, working 6.0 innings while giving up six runs. Mayer registered five strikeouts and did not give up a walk. Cole Fivecoat pitched 2.1 innings without giving up a run, while Matt Davidson went 0.2 innings.  
 
Utah Valley will play the nightcap of the double header at 3:30 p.m.
