BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield got a two-hit shutout from Max Carter and a five-run third inning in running away with the series opener over Utah Valley University, 10-0, on Thursday night at Hardt Field.
Carter retired the first 17 hitters he faced until
David Modler broke up his bid for a perfect game with a base hit back up the middle with two outs in the sixth.
Trevor Peterson followed with UVU's second hit – and base runner – but both were stranded.
After the two hits, Carter retired the final seven hitters he faced to notch the win and move to 6-1. He struck out six and didn't allow a walk in notching his second straight shutout.
The Roadrunners (17-12, 4-6) took a 1-0 lead in the first on an infield hit by Carter who helped his own cause early on, but stranded the bases full. CSUB left two more on in the second but by the third, corrected its issues with runners on base. The 'Runners scored five times in the inning, getting four RBI hits after there were two outs and took a 6-0 lead.
Ryan Grotjohn hit a solo home run in the fourth before a two-run single by David Metzgar, this week's WAC Hitter of the Week, in the fifth made it 9-0.
CSUB ended the game in the eighth, via the 10-run rule, with a bases-loaded single by Mark Pena, who finished 4-for-6 with two RBIs. The 'Runners finished 20 hits as a team with Andrew Penner and Metzgar both having three-hit nights.
The series continues on Friday at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT with reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week
Jake Mayer set to make his first start since last week's three-hit shutout performance.
