PROVO, Utah – BYU scored twice in the eighth inning to earn a come-from-behind win, 7-6, over Utah Valley University on Tuesday night at Miller Park in Provo. The game was the final game of the season in the UCCU Crosstown Clash.
The 18th-ranked Cougars (33-15) tied the game on an infield single and an error, and took the lead on another infield hit for what served as the game-winner. It was Tanner Chauncey, who drove in two runs on the night, who delivered the game-winning RBI. Utah Valley (16-33) put the first two runners on in the ninth, on a base hit by
David Modler and a walk to
Trevor Peterson, but stranded a pair to end it.
Modler went 3-for-4 with two triples, two RBIs and two runs scored while Peterson was 2-for-4 and also drove in two runs and scored twice for the Wolverines.
Bo Burrup (3-2) got the win for BYU after retiring all four hitters he faced late in the game. Mason Marshall survived the ninth to pick up his second save.
Marco Briones (2-1) took the defeat with the lone run he allowed in the eighth coming in unearned.
The Cougars began the game with a double and an RBI single to lead 1-0 but UVU starter
Kaden Schmitt got a double play and a groundout to limit the damage.
The Wolverines got on the board in the third with Modler leading off the inning with his first triple. He came in to score on the next pitch, Peterson's second base hit and just the second pitch he saw from BYU's Jordan Wood. After
Trevor Howell sacrificed Peterson to second, Utah Valley took the lead two hitters later on a two-out single from
Zac Willis.
The Cougars got both of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, on a blooper into shallow left from Daniel Schneemann to tie the game, and an RBI double from Chauncey to regain the lead.
In the fourth,
Justin Erlandson walked and
Paul Estrada singled to put two on with nobody out.
Skyler Davis sacrificed both runners over before Modler's second triple drove both baserunners home. Modler lined a ball the knuckled on centerfielder Keaton Kringlen, who dove but could not come up with it. Peterson, again on the first pitch of his at-bat, drove home Modler on a grounder to second to give Utah Valley a 5-3 lead.
The Wolverines added a run in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of a throwing error that allowed Peterson to reach. After he advanced to second on a wild pitch, Howell pulled a double down the line in left to drive in Peterson and give UVU a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kringlen drew a two-out walk before Brock Hale got BYU within a run, at 6-5, on a two-run home run to left-center.
The win gives the Cougars the season sweep in the three meetings between the neighboring schools.
The Wolverines now head to Seattle U for the final WAC series of the season beginning Thursday. UVU can secure a berth in next week's WAC Tournament in Mesa, Arizona with one win.
