OREM, Utah – BYU homered five times, getting two from Kyle Dean, in a lopsided 23-4 win over Utah Valley University in front of 4,619 fans at Brent Brown Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The Cougars (26-14) hit three home runs in the first, scoring six times to take early control. Brock Hale and Bronson Larsen both hit two-run home runs and Dean followed Larsen with a solo shot.
Dean also hit a grand slam during a nine-run seventh inning, finishing 5-for-5 with six RBIs and four runs scored.
Kade Poulsen had two hits and two runs batted in for the Wolverines (15-27).
David Modler led off the bottom of the first with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jackson Overlund to get UVU on the board.
BYU scored twice in the third and fourth, and added four more in the fifth. Two came on the Cougars' fourth home run of the game, a two-out liner over the wall in right by David Clawson.
Callahan Moltzan had a two-out, RBI double in the fifth to plate Overlund for Utah Valley's second run before Poulsen followed with an RBI base hit that scored Moltzan.
BYU broke the game completely open with the nine-run seventh, sending 12 hitters to the plate.
Tanner Chauncey went 4-for-6, doubling twice and driving in three runs for BYU, which had three players collect three hits including Clawson, who homered and drove in three runs.
Jordan Wood (4-0) got the win for the Cougars while
Eric Olguin (2-3) took the loss.
The Wolverines host second-place New Mexico State in a WAC series starting Friday night at 6 p.m. MT. UVU is currently tied for third place in with CSU Bakersfield.
