MESA, Arizona – Utah Valley University saw its season end following an 11-9 loss to Seattle University on Thursday at Hohokam Stadium in the 2017 WAC Tournament. The Wolverines (18-36) twice had five-run leads but the Redhawks (20-34-1) came from behind to survive and eliminate the defending tournament champions.
David Modler had his second straight three-hit day, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while
Zac Willis had two hits and three RBIs in his final game as a Wolverine.
Jackson Overlund went 3-for-5 for UVU with every starter having at least one hit with eight of the nine collecting multi-hit games. Utah Valley finished with 19 hits but were hurt by 14 runners left on base.
The Wolverines took a 1-0 in the first on a sacrifice fly from Willis and then stretched it to 4-0 after a three-run third. After Overlund tripled with one out, Willis drove him in with a base hit back thru the middle. Willis stole second and then scored on a
Callahan Moltzan base hit.
Kade Poulsen followed with a single to move Moltzan to second before
Skyler Davis drove in Moltzan with a base hit.
Willis drove in his third run in the fourth, on a base hit to left with the bases loaded and nobody out but the Wolverines would get no more, stranding the bases loaded.
Sean Sutton hit a solo home run in the fourth to get Seattle U on the board. An inning later, Chase Wells made it a 5-4 game with a three-run home run just over the outstretched glove of
Callahan Moltzan in right.
The Wolverines stretched the lead back to five runs, using a two-out rally to score four times in the top of the sixth and take a 9-4 lead.
Jake Berry walked to start the rally before Utah Valley had five straight hits. Moltzan singled, and Poulsen, Davis and Modler each added and RBI base hit. The Wolverines also scored a run in the inning on a wild pitch.
Seattle U responded though, getting all four back in the bottom of the sixth behind four straight two-out RBI base hits. Wells, Kyler Murphy, Aaron Stroosma, and Curtis Perrin all had consecutive RBI singles again make it a one-run game, 9-8.
The decisive three runs came in the bottom of the seventh, with Dalton Hurd tying the game with an RBI single. Three batters later, Aaron Stroosma delivered the game-winning hit, driving in two runs on a base hit to left.
