UVU hosts UMKC on Friday night in WAC Tourney semifinal

UTAH VALLEY DEFEATS GRAND CANYON IN FIRST ROUND OF WAC TOURNAMENT, MOVES ON TO FACE KANSAS CITY IN SEMIFINALS
Utah Valley used a pair of first-half goals to secure a 2-1 win over Grand Canyon in the first round of the WAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Clyde Field. The team now moves on to face top-seeded Kansas City in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m.

Sara Callister and Sadie Brockbank each scored a goal in the win over Grand Canyon on Wednesday. The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute after the team went on the attack with Amber Tripp pushing the ball up the field. Tripp then sent a pass to Callister in stride in front of the box. Callister then crossed it over to Brockbank who sent it right back to the foot of Callister who then fired it into the back of the net to give Utah Valley an early 1-0 lead.
 
UVU extended its lead in the 32nd minute as Leesa Stowe sent a long ball from the backfield to Brockbank in the middle of the field. Brockbank then sent a pass forward to a streaking Tripp who sent it back to Brockbank in the middle of the box. Brockbank then fired a shot into the left side of the goal for her team-leading eighth goal of the season to put UVU up, 2-0.
 
Sadie Brockbank leads the Wolverines with eight goals this season. Whitney Paskins has four goals this year, while Sara Callister has three. Julianna Carter and Alexis Peterson each have two. Brockbank also leads the Wolverines with 54 shots, including a team-best 22 shots on goal. Brockbank and Tripp lead the Wolverines in assists with four each. Sarah Davis leads the team in the box with an 4-5-1 record and four shutouts. She has 38 saves and owns a team-best 1.04 goals against average.

As a team, Utah Valley has netted 23 goals while allowing opponents 31. The Wolverines average 12.1 shots a match with a .409 shots on goal percentage. The Wolverines are holding opponents to a 1.55 goals per game average.

UVU AT THE WAC TOURNAMENT
The Wolverines now hold an all-time 6-3-1 record at the WAC Tournament since joining the league in 2013. Utah Valley went 1-0-1 at the tournament last year with a win over tournament host Grand Canyon in the semifinals and a 1-1 tie against Seattle U in the championship. UVU then claimed the title over SU on penalty kicks, 3-1. UVU enters a first round match for the fourth time in team history. The Wolverines hold a 2-1 record in WAC Tournament first round matches. This week marks the first time in school history that the Wolverines have hosted the WAC Women's Soccer Tournament.

BROADCAST INFO
Friday night's match against UMKC will be broadcast live on the WAC Digital Network at WACsports.com/watch. Mychal Clanton and Jordan Angeli will be handling the play-by-play and color duties. UVU play-by-play man Brandon Crow will be on the sidelines for the broadcasts this week.

BRUCE AND MOORE EARN POSTSEASON WAC HONORS
Utah Valley's Hannah Bruce and Madeline Moore have been named to the 2018 All-WAC team, the league office announced following a vote of the WAC's nine head coaches.
 
Bruce helped anchor the UVU back line to four shutouts during WAC play this season. The junior defender helped the UVU defense limit opponents to a 1.58 goals per game average, including an impressive 0.88 goals per game average during conference play. She helped the Wolverines hold opponents to 11.9 shots per game during WAC play. Bruce also has one assist and four shots this year. She has led the team in minutes this season with 1,680.
 Moore has started and played in each of UVU's 19 matches this season. The freshman midfielder has tallied one assist, 13 shots, and two shots on goal this season. She has played a major factor in UVU's four shutouts this season on the defensive end. Moore ranks second on the team in minutes played at 1,516.

ABOUT KANSAS CITY
Kansas City won the regular season WAC title for a second-straight season with a 7-1-0 record and 21 points. The team holds a 15-4 overall record and has won eight of its last 10 matches. Senior forward Kelsey Mothershead and freshman forward/midfielder Ryan Childers lead the team with 10 goals each this season. Freshman midfielder/forward Ryan Childers leads the nation with 14 assists, followed closely behind by teammate senior midfielder/forward Lexie Howard with 10. Howard also has nine goals and is tied with Mothershead with a team-best 28 points. Freshman keeper Afton Fennewald leads the team in goal with 52 saves having given up only 12 goals this season. She also has eight shutouts.  As a team, UMKC has scored an impressive 48 goals with 46 assists. The team averages 2.53 goals per game and owns a 0.95 goals allowed average. The 'Roos are coached by Chris Cissell, who is now in his eighth season with the team.

SERIES HISTORY VS. KANSAS CITY
Utah Valley and Kansas City will meet on the pitch for the 11th time on Friday night. The all-time series is tied 5-5-0. UMKC took a 1-0 win on Oct. 19 in Orem. The 'Roos also took a 3-0 win in Kansas City last season. UVU has won three of the last five matches in the series dating back to a 1-0 shutout win at UMKC on Oct. 2, 2015.  UMKC has taken the last two matches in the series. UVU holds a 3-1-0 series lead in games played in Orem. UMKC's win over UVU earlier this season marked the first time that the 'Roos have won a game at Clyde Field.

CLYDE FIELD MAGIC
Utah Valley holds an impressive 74-37-11 all time record at Clyde Field. The team has lost just seven matches over the past four seasons (three this season) on the home pitch. UVU went 5-1-0 at home last season, including wins over Wyoming, Seattle U, New Mexico State, UT Rio Grande Valley, and Grand Canyon. The Wolverines went 5-2-1 during the 2016 season and were unbeaten at home during the 2015 season with a 9-0-1 mark. UVU has consistently ranked in the top-40 nationally in attendance. The team holds a 3-3-1 home mark this year.

RECORD-BREAKING CROWD, UVU RANKS 13TH NATIONALLY IN ATTENDANCE
Utah Valley set a new single game women's soccer attendance record with its 3,211 fans at the Chicago State game on Oct. 5. The UVU marketing team invited several grades schools to the morning game and the schools showed up to set the new attendance mark. According to the NCAA, UVU ranks 13th in the nation in average attendance at 1,218 fans per game.
