OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University men's soccer coach
Greg Maas has announced the additions of four players to the spring 2018 roster: Caiden Brown, Luis Garza, Ahmed Longmire, and Caleb Wight.
The four enrolled at UVU for the spring semester and will have the spring to train with the team before the 2018 season commences in August.
Brown (Orem, Utah) is a goalkeeper who attended Timpanogos High School and was an All-State performer. He played for the Utah Rangers and Utah FC and was a member of a State Cup Championship in 2015. After serving an LDS mission in New York, Brown played for the BYU club team in 2017, helping the team to an NIRSA National Championship.
"Matched with his 6-foot-4-inch frame, Caiden is one of the longest, most athletic and explosive goalkeepers I have seen," Maas said. "Arguably, Caiden joins one of the best goalkeeper corps in the country, but his upside and future with our program is limitless. He's made an immediate impact and has raised the bar for everyone on the team."
Garza (El Paso, Texas) is a transfer from the University of South Florida and will be a junior this fall. As a freshman in 2016 he scored three goals and added an assist before a coaching change prior to his sophomore campaign. Garza was a teammate of UVU's
Zach Maas on the US Youth Soccer Region IV '98 ODP Team and played club for Tigres UANL.
"Luis is an absolute gem of a player — he's technically sound, skillful, and has fit in seamlessly with the team since arriving in January from South Florida," said Maas. "Soccer savvy, he's comfortable on the ball under pressure, and will bring a versatility and dimension to our attack that will undoubtedly be fun to watch."
Longmire (Las Vegas, Nevada) graduated from Centennial High School early to enroll at UVU this spring. He was named the 4A Nevada Defensive Player of the Year and was also named to the All-Northwest League and received the scholar-athlete award. Longmire played club for Heat FC for six seasons and with Las Vegas Soccer Academy for one year. He was part of a select team that won the Gothia World Youth Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2016.
"Ahmed has an opportunity to make an immediate impact on our backline. He's an exceptional defender with tremendous athleticism, and the ability to produce goals getting forward in the attack. By graduating high school early, Ahmed will fast-track his development, and that will prepare him to contribute right away this coming fall," said Maas.
Wight (Pleasant View, Utah) initially signed with Utah Valley in 2015 prior to serving an LDS mission in Redlands, California. Wight attended Weber High School and led the team to a region championship. He was on the US Youth Soccer Region IV '97 ODP team and also played for Sparta United.
"Caleb is a physical, no-nonsense player that will bring tremendous presence and stability to our midfield. A true student of the game, matched with a relentless work-ethic, Caleb's ability to influence the game and his teammates is sure to be felt," Maas said.
Utah Valley's 2018 recruiting class is due to be announced next week with the signing period opening on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
