LOS ANGELES – USC put up six runs in the fifth inning en route to an 8-6 victory and a series win over Utah Valley University on Sunday at Dedeaux Field in Southern California.
A trio of Wolverines (1-2) had two-hit days, accounting for six of the team's eight hits, with
Trevor Howell going 2-for-4 with an RBI while
Trevor Peterson and
Jackson Overlund each went 2-for-5. Peterson scored twice and had an RBI and Overlund tripled and drove in two runs. USC finished with 12 hits, led by Brandon Perez who was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
Trailing 1-0 after an error allowed the Trojans (2-1) to strike first in the second inning, the Wolverines scored three times in the third to take the lead.
David Modler reached on a bunt single and then scored when Howell doubled him home with one out in the inning. Two batters later Peterson singled to right to score Howell and give UVU a 2-1 lead. A wild pitch allowed Peterson to move up to second, which proved big when Overlund singled him home for the third run of the inning.
An error in the bottom of the third again came back to haunt the Wolverines after Matthew Acosta singled to short and later moved all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He scored on a base hit by Perez.
Utah Valley got than run back in the fourth, scoring without a hit after two walks, a hit batter and a walk to Michael Beltran forced in Estrada, all after there were two outs and nobody on.
In the pivotal fifth inning, USC sent 10 men to the plate with six players collecting hits. Brady Shockey singled home two runs to tie the game before the Trojans took the lead on an errant throw following a bunt single by Kaleb Murphy. Perez added his third RBI of the game on a base hit before Blake Sabol doubled him home to cap the six-run frame.
The Wolverines chipped into the deficit in the seventh when Peterson singled and then scored when Overlund tripled to deep right-center. Drew Sims drove home Overlund with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-6.
Connor Lunn retired Utah Valley in order in the ninth to pick up his second save while Solomon Bates picked up the win after tossing 2.1 innings in relief. Walker Ramsey took the loss for the Wolverines. A trio of UVU relievers all had scoreless appearances including
Ondrej Sebek, who struck out a pair. Fabian Palacios (1.1 IP) and Drew Hill (1.0 IP) both made their debuts as Wolverines with scoreless outings.
