UTAH VALLEY SET TO HOST HOME OPENER WEDNESDAY AT WOLVERINE FIELD
OREM, Utah – After playing its first 22 games of the 2018 season away from home, the Utah Valley University softball team will finally return to Orem to host a home opening twin bill on Wednesday, March 21 at Wolverine Softball Field. UVU will first host Idaho State at 1 p.m., before closing the day against in-state rival Utah State that afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Â
Both contests will air live on the
WAC Digital Network and will also feature live stats at
UVUStats.com.
Â
Prior to Utah Valley's afternoon games, there will first be a neutral game contested on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. between ISU and USU at Wolverine Softball Field. Admission to the neutral-site morning contest will feature free admission, while fans can purchase tickets to UVU's two afternoon games at
UVU.UniversityTickets.com.
Â
The Wolverines will enter Wednesday's games with a 7-15 overall record after dropping a doubleheader at Boise State and getting swept in a three-game series at defending Big Sky champion Montana last week.
Â
UVU had its best chance to win on March 16, when starter
Addie Jensen found herself locked in an extra-inning pitcher's duel against UM's Michaela Hood. Despite pitching eight-plus innings of stellar softball, Jensen and the Wolverines ended up dropping the tightly contested battle, 2-1, in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jensen pitched very well for UVU in the ballgame by striking out five and walking just one while scattering eight hits and surrendering just two runs in eight-plus innings of work. The contest marked Jensen's third extra-inning outing of the season and her sixth complete game.
Â
Despite going winless in the five games,
Taleigh Williams and
Brianna Moeller both hit over .400 for the Wolverines on the week. Williams posted a .429 average (3-for-7) with a double and a walk, while Moeller hit .412 (7-for-17) with two doubles, a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Kirsten Andersen also had a nice showing offensively by hitting .333 (5-for-15) with two doubles, two stolen bases, two walks and a run scored. Freshman
Peyton Angulo too extended her reached base streak to 16 games after hitting .250 (3-for-12) with a double, a homer, three walks, three RBIs, two runs scored and two sacrifice flies.
Â
On the season, the freshman Angulo leads the Wolverines at the plate with a .413 batting average, six doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs. Moeller is next with a .375 clip, a team-high four home runs, three doubles, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored. Jensen paces UVU in the circle with a team-best 2.90 ERA and a 4-6 record in 67.2 innings of work.
Â
ALL-TIME IN HOME OPENERS
Utah Valley will enter Wednesday holding a 7-7 all-time record in home openers at NCAA Division I level. The Wolverines defeated Maine in their home opener last season, but prior to that had dropped six consecutive home opening contests. UVU also holds a 92-99 home record in 15 seasons of NCAA Division I competition.
Â
ABOUT IDAHO STATE
The Bengals will come to town with a 3-17 overall record, but having gone 2-3 at the UC Riverside Classic last weekend. ISU picked up both of its wins on the weekend over Purdue of the Big Ten Conference, while also falling twice to Texas Tech and once to UCR. Idaho State holds its lone other win of the year over UVU after splitting a pair of games against the Wolverines at the Colorado State Classic two week's ago. The Bengals were picked to finish fourth in the Big Sky this season after going 18-27 overall and 8-11 in league play last year.
Â
Makenzie VanSickle leads ISU offensively with a .340 average and six stolen bases, while Ema Bordenkecher paces the way in the power numbers by hitting .305 with two homers and 13 RBIs. Mariah Mulcahy leads the way in the circle with a 2-9 overall record and a 7.71 ERA in 52.2 innings of work, while Ashlyn Ames is 0-6 with a team-best 4.44 ERA in 41.0 innings.
Â
Wednesday's contest will mark the 43rd all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Bengals and the third of the season. UVU will enter play holding to a 23-19 series lead and having split the last four meetings, which includes going 1-1 against one another earlier this month at the Colorado State Classic.
Â
ABOUT UTAH STATE
The Aggies will enter Wednesday with a 9-14 overall record and off to an 0-3 start in Mountain West play. After going 1-4 at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational March 8-10, USU then got swept in its first Mountain West series of the season at home last week to Boise State. BSU took all three games via the run rule. Utah State was picked to finish fourth in the MW this season after going 33-18 overall and 14-9 in league play in 2017.
Â
Riley Plogger and Brina Buttacavoli are the one-two offense punch for the Aggies. Plogger holds a .370 batting average with five homers, five doubles, 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored, while Buttancovoli is right behind her hitting .369 with six home runs, two doubles, 21 RBIs and 14 runs scored. Delaney Hull leads the way in the circle with a 4-3 record and a 2.62 ERA, while Kellie White is 4-6 with a 3.71 ERA.
Â
Wednesday's contest will mark the 32nd all-time meeting between UVU and USU. The Aggies will enter play holding to a 21-10 series lead and having won six of the past seven meetings. Wednesday's ballgame will mark the first of two season meetings between the two, as UVU will later head to Logan for a single game on April 18.
Â
ON DECK FOR UVU
Following Wednesday's games, Utah Valley will be off until March 30-31 when it will head to Seattle to begin Western Athletic Conference play in a three-game series at Seattle U. The Wolverines were picked to finish fourth this season after tying for third in 2017.
