UTAH VALLEY SET TO OPEN WAC SLATE FRIDAY AT SEATTLE U
OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University softball team will begin Western Athletic Conference play this weekend at Seattle University. The Wolverines and Redhawks will play a three-game conference series on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, at Seattle U's Logan Field.
Â
UVU and SU will first play a doubleheader at 5 p.m. MT/4 p.m. PT and 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT on Friday evening, before closing the series with a single game on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT/2 p.m. PT. All three games will be streamed live on the
WAC Digital Network and will also feature live stats by visiting
SeattleStats.com.
Â
The Wolverines will enter conference play with an 8-16 overall record after splitting a pair of home games against Idaho State and Utah State last week. UVU was picked to finish fourth in the WAC this season after posting its best conference season since joining the WAC in 2014 by tying for third a season ago with a 7-8 league mark.
Â
After playing its first 22 games of the season on the road, Utah Valley first defeated Idaho State in its 2018 home opener on March 21, 11-3, before falling to in-state foe Utah State, 4-3, later in the day. With a pair of sixth-inning runs, which included a bases loaded walk-off walk from
Eryn Sustayta, UVU sealed the 11-3 run-rule victory over ISU. Then holding to a late 3-2 lead over USU, the Wolverines gave up two seventh-inning runs to fall to the Aggies.
Â
The 2017 WAC Pitcher of the Year
Lauren Frailey Spendlove earned the win for the Wolverines against the Bengals after allowing just three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work, while
Skylar Cook led the way at the plate by going a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored, a run batted in and a stolen base.
Peyton Angulo and
Kaylee Bott also had strong performances by going 1-for-2 and 1-for-4, respectively, with two runs driven in apiece.
Â
The true freshman Angulo leads the Wolverines offensively on the season, as she will enter conference play with an even .400 batting average. She also holds seven doubles, three homers, 14 RBIs, and previously tallied both an 11-game hitting streak and a 17-game reached base safely streak on the year.
Brianna Moeller is next with a .352 average, four round trippers, three doubles, two triples and 11 RBIs.
Addie Jensen tops the UVU pitching staff with a 4-7 record and a 2.91 ERA in 74.2 innings of work, while Frailey Spendlove is 2-2 and
Makayla Shadle is 2-5.
Â
SKYLAR COOK IS A PERFECT 18-FOR-18 IN STOLEN BASES
With three more stolen bases last week, Utah Valley junior
Skylar Cook is now a perfect 18-for-18 in stolen bases on the year. The 18 stolen bases is second best in the WAC and also ranks her second in the UVU single-season record books behind Morgan Summers Smith's record of 24 (24-for-25) in 2016. Cook's 18 stolen bases are also the most stolen bases that a Wolverine has ever achieved without being caught.

ABOUT SEATTLE U
The Redhawks will enter Friday's conference opener currently leading the WAC standings with a 22-15 overall record. Seattle U went 3-2 this past weekend at the Gaucho Classic II with a pair of wins over St. Mary's and another over host UC Santa Barbara. Prior to that, SU went 5-1 the previous weekend with three wins over Bryant and two more over Portland State. Seattle also holds wins on the year over common opponents Utah State, Nevada, Southern Utah and Montana. The Redhawks were picked to finish third in the WAC this season after tying for third with UVU a season ago with a 7-8 league mark.
Â
Madison Cathcart not only leads SU and the WAC with a .457 average and a whopping 49 RBIs, but she also leads the entire nation in both homers and total bases with 17 home runs and 112 total bases on the season. Ally Choate is next with a .346 average, while the one-two punch of Shianne Smith and Carley Nance leads the SU pitching staff. Shianne Smith holds a 5-1 record and a WAC-best 2.15 ERA, while Nance will enter the weekend with an 11-10 record and a 2.69 ERA.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SEATTLE U
Friday's opener will mark the 32nd all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Redhawks, as the two have been conference foes dating back to one another's PCSC days. Seattle U will enter play holding to an 18-13 series lead, but UVU took two-of-three from SU in Orem last season.
Â
ON DECK FOR UVU
Following the weekend series, UVU will return to Orem to open up a six-game homestand with a non-conference doubleheader against Boise State on Wednesday April 4. The Wolverines will then return to WAC play next weekend by hosting Grand Canyon on April 6-7, before capping the homestand with a UCCU Crosstown Clash against neighboring rival BYU on April 10.Â
