Big eighth inning costly in loss in series finale

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used a seven-run eighth inning in upending Utah Valley University, 15-9, on Sunday to take three of four from the Wolverines in the series.

The Wolverines (4-7) led 8-4 after a five-run sixth inning but the Islanders (10-2) scored two in the seventh and then erupted in the eighth en route to the win.

Trevor Howell and Jackson Overlund both had three hits for UVU with Overlund driving in three on a bases-loaded double in the fifth. Enrique Sanchez finished 5-for-5 with two RBIs while Harrison Dinicola was 3-for-5 with three runs and two batted for Corpus Christi. Thomas Jeffries, who came off the bench, went 2-for-3 with four RBIs including a three-run home run in the eighth.

After the Islanders scored two in the first and added two more in the third, Utah Valley came back with a three-run fifth. Jake Berry and Trevor Howell had back-to-back singles with one out and after Trevor Peterson was hit by a pitch with two gone, Overlund double down the line in left to clear the bases and make it a 4-3 game.

The Wolverines took the lead in the fifth, scoring five times in the inning. Drew Sims had an RBI groundout, Howell an RBI double, and Peterson and two-run double.

Corpus Christi scored twice in both the bottom of the fifth and the sixth to tie the game before Utah Valley regained the lead on two-out, bases-loaded walk to Ethan Payne to drive in the ninth Wolverine run.

In the decisive eighth, the Islanders sent 10 hitters to the plate and scored the seven runs on four hits, including Jeffries second home run of the year.

Utah Valley travels to Mississippi State next weekend for a three-game series in Starkville, Miss.
