OREM, Utah –The Utah Valley University baseball team built a 5-1 lead through seven innings but gave up six runs in the eighth and dropped the back end of Saturday's double header against CSU Bakersfield, 7-6, at UCCU Ballpark.
As a team, the Wolverines recorded 16 hits while allowing nine. Five errors proved to be costly, including three in the eighth inning when the Roadrunners made their comeback. Despite the setback,
Trevor Peterson drove in three RBI's on a 3-for-5 performance which included a home run and a double.
Drew Hill recorded the loss on the night.
UVU fell to 12-21 overall and 4-7 in WAC play with the loss.
The Roadrunners opened the scoring as Daniel Nist sent a solo shot over the center field wall in the top of the third inning. Utah Valley promptly responded as
Paul Estrada tripled to right field and then scored on an RBI single from
Trevor Howell in the bottom half of the inning.
UVU jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth as Peterson doubled to right-center field to score Howell from third and
David Modler from first. In the next at bat,
Jackson Overlund drilled a double down the left-field line to drive in Peterson.
Peterson's home run in the bottom of the seventh pushed the lead to four but Bakersfield put up six runs in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead. The Wolverines loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning but failed to manufacture any runs. Modler provided a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth and came around to score on an Overlund single, but the rally and the game ended there.
The Wolverines and Runners will close out the series on Sunday (April 15) at 12:00 p.m. MST at UCCU Ballpark. Utah Valley will then welcome in-state rival Utah to Orem on Tuesday, April 17, before resuming WAC play at Chicago State.
