CHICAGO, IL— Pitcher
Jake Mayer went the distance, tossing nine scoreless innings to record a complete-game shutout and the Utah Valley University baseball team scored a game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning to beat Chicago State in game one of a three-game series on Friday afternoon at Cougar Stadium.
Mayer struck out two batters and walked none in his impressive performance and allowed only one extra-base hit on the way to improving his record to 3-5 for the year. This was the second complete-game shutout of his career.
In total, the Cougars got seven hits while the Utah Valley lineup produced six.
David Modler was responsible for three of those hits with three singles, and
Trevor Peterson doubled for UVU's only extra base hit of the day.
The Wolverines improved to 13-22 for the year and 5-8 in conference play. Chicago State dropped to 5-29 and remained winless in WAC competition.
After playing eight scoreless innings, Utah Valley loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and
Paul Estrada found himself in a rundown between second and third base.
Kody Hall then took off for home from third and crossed the plate for the winning run as the Wolverines completed the triple steal.
Both teams played a clean game in the field with no errors, though UVU did leave 11 runners stranded on base compared to six for Chicago State.
Drew Sims and Estrada recorded the other two hits for Utah Valley and
Ryan Eastburn drew two walks.
The series will resume on Saturday, April 21 with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. MST. Live stats and updates will be available via GoUVU.com.
