CHICAGO – Chicago State's Nick Heidenthal hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Utah Valley University baseball team never recovered as it fell 4-1 at Cougar Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The loss proved costly as Chicago State claimed the series 2-1. Utah Valley now sits at 13-24 for the season and falls to 5-10 in WAC play.
The Wolverines could not manufacture any earned runs for the game as they produced only five hits and left 10 runners stranded on base.
Skyler Davis was the only UVU batter to reach base safely multiple times as he recorded the team's only extra-base hit with a double in addition to a walk.
Trevor Howell drew a walk for the lone RBI on Utah Valley's only run.
In the top of the second inning, the Wolverines got off to a promising start as they loaded the bases and Howell's walk scored Davis. A pop up on the next play left three runners stranded, and Chicago State quickly responded with a solo homerun in the bottom of the inning to even the score. The only other runs of the day came on Heidenthal's three-run shot.
Three pitchers put in work for Utah Valley with
Kaden Schmitt earning the loss.
Jake Carr and
Marco Briones also took the mound, and the three combined to strike out two batters while walking three.
Utah Valley will now take a break from conference play as it travels to California for a three-game series with Saint Mary's of the West Coast Conference. Game one is scheduled for Friday, April 27, with a start time of 4:00 p.m. MST.
