OREM, Utah – A trio of Utah Valley University players homered as the Wolverines earned a two-game series split with Air Force following a 5-4 win on Tuesday at UCCU Ballpark.
Jackson Overlund,
Paul Estrada and
David Modler all hit home runs for the Wolverines (12-15), who scored four of their five runs via the long ball.
Jake Carr (3-1) threw 3.1 innings in relief to pick up the win while
Drew Hill got the final five outs to earn his fifth save. UVU starter
Ondrej Sebek did not factor into the decision but struck out six over four innings of work. Jeff Gerlica (0-1) took the loss for the Falcons (12-16).
After Air Force scored a run in the top of the first, Overlund hit his fourth of home run of the season with two down in the bottom of the inning, plating
Trevor Peterson to give UVU a 2-1 lead.
Estrada hit a go-ahead home run to left-center with one out in the fifth and Modler followed two batters later when he snuck an opposite field home run just inside the left-field foul pole. Both were the first home runs of the season for each batter.
Peterson gave Utah Valley a 5-2 lead in the seventh, driving home
Trevor Howell on a base it, who singled and stole second earlier in the inning.
The Falcons got two back in the eighth, getting back-to-back doubles from Rob Dau and Nic Ready, and a RBI single from Ashton Easley. Air Force got the potential tying and go-ahead runs on with one out, but Hill got out of it on a liner to Howell at short, who was able to double off the runner at second to end the inning. Hill then retired the side in order in the ninth, getting Ryan Robb on a comebacker to end it.
The Wolverines return to WAC play with a three-game series at league-leading Grand Canyon beginning Friday night. The Lopes are the reigning WAC Champions and the preseason favorite. Both Utah Valley and Seattle U currently sit in second at 4-2 in league play while GCU is 5-1.
