UTAH VALLEY HOSTS BOISE STATE WEDNESDAY, GCU THIS WEEKEND
OREM, Utah – After opening Western Athletic Conference play on the road last weekend, the Utah Valley University softball team will return home to open a six-game homestand on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Boise State. The Wolverines will then return to league play this weekend when they welcome Grand Canyon to town for a three-game series.
Â
Wednesday's twin bill against the Mountain West Broncos is set for 1 and 3 p.m., while Friday's series opener against GCU is scheduled for a doubleheader at 3 and 5 p.m. and Saturday's finale against the Antelopes is slated for a 1Â p.m. start. All five games will be played at Wolverine Softball Field and will be streamed live on the
WAC Digital Network. Admission will be free of charge for this week's games as well.Â
Â
UVU will enter the week with a 9-18 overall record and a 1-2 start in WAC play after taking the series finale in extra innings at Seattle U last Saturday. After dropping the conference-opening doubleheader on Friday, 9-3 and 5-0, Utah Valley responded by winning a wild 8-7 10-inning contest over the Redhawks to take a game in the opening WAC series.
Â
Thanks to home runs
Madison Sisco and
Basia Query as well as a six-run fourth inning, the Wolverines jumped out to a 7-1 lead in Saturday's series finale against Seattle. The Redhawks then answered with a run in the last of the fourth and five more in the fifth to tie the game at 7-7 and send the contest to extras. UVU right-hander
Addie Jensen then pitched brilliantly in relief for the Wolverines as she gave up just two hits and no runs in 5.2 innings of impressive action.Â
Â
With the game still deadlocked at 7-7 in the 10th, the Wolverines finally managed to break through with an RBI sacrifice fly from
Lyndsay Steverson to give the Wolverines an 8-7 advantage. Jensen then returned to the circle for her sixth inning of relief in the bottom of the 10th, and the UVU junior did a nice job of pitching around a leadoff double by striking out two of the next three hitters she faced to help the Wolverines record the one-run victory.
Â
Jensen led Utah Valley in the circle in the series by going 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA and striking out eight and limiting opponents to just a .186 batting average off of her.
Brianna Moeller paced the Wolverines at the plate by hitting .417 with an RBI, while Angulo hit .364 and Query posted a .308 clip with a homer.
Â
On the season, the freshman Angulo leads UVU offensively with a .393 batting average, seven doubles, three homers and 15 RBIs. Moeller is next with a .364 clip, four home runs, three doubles, two triples and 12 RBIs. Angulo's .393 average is good enough to rank her third in the WAC. The junior transfer from Salt Lake Community College Jensen paces Utah Valley in the circle with a 5-8 record, 2.92 ERA and eight complete games.
Â
ABOUT BOISE STATE
The Broncos will enter the week with a 23-11 overall record and a 6-3 clip in Mountain West Conference play but will first play a pair of games at Idaho State on Tuesday before making the trek to Orem for Wednesday's twin bill. BSU took two of three from San Diego State last weekend and will enter the week having won five of the past six ballgames after also sweeping a doubleheader at Portland State and taking the series finale against San José State a couple of weeks ago. Boise State is currently in second place in the MW standings and was picked to finish seventh in the league this year after going 33-20 overall and 12-12 in conference play in 2017.
Â
Rebekah Cervantes leads the Broncos at the plate with a .427 average, 11 doubles, six homers and 36 RBIs, while Kelsey Broadus and Gianna Mancha lead the way in the circle. Broadus is 8-5 with a 2.32 ERA while Mancha is 10-3 with a 3.55 ERA. Cervantes' average is also good enough to rank her second in the Mountain West Conference.
Â
Wednesday's games will mark the fourth and fifth meetings on the season between UVU and BSU. Boise State is 2-1 on the year against the Wolverines after sweeping a twin bill in Boise last month. Utah Valley previously won the first game of the season, 4-3, on March 3 at the Red Desert Classic in St. George. The Broncos also hold the all-time series advantage, 6-3, but UVU is 1-1 all-time against BSU in Orem.
Â
ABOUT GRAND CANYON
GCU will enter this weekend's series with a 20-19 overall record and a 1-2 start in WAC play after dropping two of three to CSU Bakersfield in Bakersfield last weekend. After going 2-2 with wins over No. 17 Ohio State and Cal State Fullerton at the Easton Invitational March 16-17 and splitting a midweek doubleheader against Pac-12 foe Utah on March 20, the Lopes then opened conference play with a 1-2 outing against the Roadrunners last weekend. CSUB took the opener and the finale by scores of 3-2, while GCU took the middle game, 7-3. Grand Canyon was picked to win the WAC this season after earning a share of the regular season conference title in 2017 with a 36-18 overall record and an 11-4 conference clip.
Â
Shea Smith paces GCU at the plate with an even .400 average, eight doubles, three triples and 24 RBIs, while her sister Sierra Smith is right behind her with a .389 average, six doubles, four homers and 30 RBIs. Shea Smith's .400 average is good enough to rank her second in the WAC.
Â
Friday's series opener will mark the 13th all-time meeting between UVU and GCU. Grand Canyon will enter play holding to a perfect 12-0 all-time advantage after sweeping a three-game WAC series in each of the past four seasons.
Â
ON DECK FOR UVU
Following this week's games, Utah Valley will remain home to close its six-game homestand with a UCCU Crosstown Clash against neighboring foe BYU on Tuesday, April 10 at 3 p.m. at Wolverine Field. Following the midweek rivalry game, UVU will return to conference play with a three-game WAC series at UMKC on April 13-14.
