Arizona comes back to edge UVU, 7-6

PROVO, Utah – Utah Valley University jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Arizona responded with seven consecutive runs en route to a 7-6 win on Monday night at Miller Park. The game was played on BYU's campus due to unplayable field conditions at UCCU Ballpark.

Both teams had five-run innings, with the Wildcats (25-17) putting up their crooked number in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead. The inning was capped with a go-ahead three-run home run from Matt Fraizer for what turned out to be the game-winner.

In his first career start, freshman right-hander Drew Hill was strong for Utah Valley (14-28). Hill lasted six innings and struck out six, allowing just one run on three hits, and left in line for a win.

Trevor Howell went 3-for-4 for UVU while three others had multi-hit games including Ryan Eastburn, who had a two-run triple, and Callahan Moltzan, who doubled and drove in a run. Trevor Peterson also had two hits for the Wolverines.

A pair of infield singles started off a five-run third inning for the Wolverines. Jake Berry hit one in the hole at short and Peterson hit a chopper to third. Howell sacrificed the runners on a bunt, but also reached when the throw got away, allowing Berry to score the first run of the game.

Eastburn followed with a triple to left-center that scored both Peterson and Howell before David Modler singled up the middle to plate Eastburn for a 4-0 UVU lead. A two-out error allowed another run to score, giving the Wolverines a 5-0 lead. Two errors in the inning contributed two a pair of unearned runs in the inning.

A leadoff triple by Alfonso Rivas led to a run for the Wildcats in the sixth. Rivas scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Haug to make it 5-1, but Hill escaped further trouble when he got Tate Soderstrom to line out to end the inning.

Arizona loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Fabian Palacios got Rivas to fly out to center, which brought home a second run but also helped limit the damage to just one run.

The Wildcats opened the decisive eighth with five straight hits. Back-to-back doubles started the inning before two base hits put runners at second and third with UVU ahead 5-4. Fraizer then hit the first pitch he saw out to right, giving Arizona a 7-5 lead.

Utah Valley scored a run in the ninth when Modler walked, moved to second on a groundout and then to third on a wild pitch. He scored when Moltzan grounded out to second for out number two.

Josh Haley (1-1) got the win for Arizona while Avery Weems picked up his first save after tossing the final two innings. Marco Briones (0-1) took the loss for Utah Valley.

The Wolverines now head to Las Cruces, New Mexico this weekend for a three-game WAC series at New Mexico State beginning Friday.
