SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Utah Valley University dropped its season finale at Sacramento State, 8-2, on Saturday at John Smith Field. The victory for the Hornets (31-23, 17-7) gives them the series sweep and the No. 2 seed in next week's WAC Tournament.
The Wolverines (15-37, 6-18) season their season come to an end after not finishing in the top six in the conference standings to not qualify for the tournament.
Senior
Trevor Peterson finished 2-for-4 and drove in both runs for UVU. He finished the season with a .306 average, leading the team for the second year in a row and ending his two-year career with a .331 batting average.
The Wolverines were limited to four hits on the day, with
David Modler and
Kody Hall picking up the others. Modler finished his final season at .294 and a career .306 average.
Sac State took early control of the contest with a four-run first inning. Utah Valley's runs came in the second when
Jake Berry walked to lead off the inning and later moved up when
Kody Hall singled to left with two outs. Peterson then doubled both runners home to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Keith Torres hit a solo home run for the Hornets in the fifth before a three-run sixth accounted for the remainder of the day's scoring. Torres had a two-run single in the inning and finished with three RBIs on the day. Ian Dawkins went 3-for-4 for the Hornets, who finished with 12 hits on the afternoon.
UVU senior right-hander
Ondrej Sebek threw two hitless innings in his final appearance, striking out a pair. Another senior,
Jackson Overlund, was hitless on the day but still finished with a .302 batting average and a two-year career average of .322 with 13 home runs, 36 doubles and 76 batted in.
