Men's golf opens season at Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational

OREM—The Utah Valley men's golf team opens 2018-19 season at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Sept. 7-9, at the Eisenhower Golf Club at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The tournament will be played at Eisenhower Golf Club's par-72, 7,511-yard Blue Course. Golfers will play 18 holes with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. (MT) on Friday and Saturday. Sunday's final round will begin at 7:15 a.m.

"The guys are ready to compete," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Curran. "We have a few new faces in the lineup this week. The course is very soft, so it will play long. The greens are tough so putting will be key."

The Blue Course of the Eisenhower Golf Club opened in 1959 and is named after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and is currently ranked as the third-best military course in the nation (PGA.com) and 24th best college course (Golf Week) in the country.

The 16-team field includes Air Force, Abilene Christian, Colorado, Drake, Missouri State, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, SIU Edwardsville, Southern Utah, Texas State, UC Davis, Utah State, Weber State, Wyoming, and Utah Valley.

The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational is in its 50th season. Formerly known as the Rocky Mountain Invitational and the Pikes Peak Invitational, the event was re-named the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in 2003 to honor the legendary coach who headed up the Air Force program for 25 years and is a member of the Air Force Athletics' Hall of Fame.

Wyoming won last year's Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational with a 29-under-par 835. Utah Valley finished 14th in last year's 19-team field, carding a score of 11-over-par 299. Blair Bursey led UVU with an individual 35th place finish with a three-round score of 1-over-par 217.

Representing Utah Valley at this weekend's tournament will be Jake Bryson, Tyler Holmes, Aaron Yeates, Gabe Lysen, and Jake Godfrey.

Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com while daily results and recaps will be posted online at GoUVU.com.
