COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior forward
Blake Frischknecht was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and headlines six Utah Valley University men's soccer players to be named to the 2019 All-WAC Teams. The All-WAC Teams were announced on the eve of the 2019 WAC Tournament at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Frischknecht is the first Wolverine to receive a WAC Player of the Year honor in the program's six-year history. Joining him on the first team is sophomore defender
Ahmed Longmire while junior defender
Mark Brown and senior midfielder
Alec Felix were named to the second team. Senior defender
Aaron Caprio and junior midfielder
Zach Maas received honorable mention.
"I'm really proud of our program, the year we've had, and to have six players recognized on the All-WAC teams is representative of the collective hard work by everyone on our team," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Blake had a fantastic year, and he is very deserving of this postseason honor as the WAC Offensive Player of the Year. He has not only raised the bar in our record books, but he has helped to set the standard for all rising players with UVU men's soccer."
Frischknecht has set new program records in goals scored (12) and points (25) and also has six game-winning goals, which is tied for first in the country among all Division I players. He was a two-time WAC Offensive Player of the Week this year, including on Monday after he scored twice in a 4-1 win last Saturday against Air Force. Frischknecht was a second-team All-WAC and third-team All-Far West Region selection as a junior.
For Felix, it's the third All-WAC recognition after receiving honorable mention in each of the last two seasons. The career-leader in minutes played at Utah Valley, Felix has three goals and four assists this season.
For Longmire, Brown, Caprio, and Maas, the all-conference selection is a first. Longmire has played every minute on the pitch for UVU this season, nearly 1,700 minutes. Brown, who was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection last week, has a team-high five assists, which leads all WAC defenders.
Caprio has a pair of goals as the team's center back, including the final goal in last week's Senior Day win on a penalty kick. It was Caprio's first – and only – career goal at home on Clyde Field. Maas is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Team member and has six goals and has four assists, and is second on the team with 16 points. Maas has also scored a goal in each of the last four games.
Frischknecht and Longmire give Utah Valley eight first-team All-WAC selections all-time. The Wolverines have had 11 second-team and six honorable mention players for a total of 25 All-WAC picks. The six All-WAC in 2019 matches the team-high from the 2016 WAC Championship when UVU had four first-team and two second-team members, and
Greg Maas was named WAC Coach of the Year.
The other major awards all went to Seattle with Nkosi Burgess the Defensive Player of the year, James Morris the Freshman of the Year and Pete Fewing the Coach of the Year.
