OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University junior
Zach Maas was named to the CoSIDA 2019 Academic All-America® Men's Soccer Third Team, the organization announced on Thursday. Maas becomes just the fourth UVU student-athlete to receive the honor during the school's NCAA Division I era.
"Zach's commitment to academic and athletic excellence is remarkable. To be recognized as Academic All-America® is an incredible honor not just for him, but for our entire program and university as well," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "I couldn't be more proud of Zach and the commitment to academics by all of our student-athletes here at UVU. I am hopeful this achievement may help to further inspire those to strive to do their best in the classroom and in competition."
Maas owns a 3.87 cumulative GPA while majoring in exercise science/pre-med with a minor in chemistry. On the pitch he was second on the team with six goals and 17 points, while sharing team-high honors with five assists.
Maas became eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams after he joined teammate
Mark Brown in earning CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team honors earlier in the fall. It was Maas' second selection to the all-district team and the program's 11th all-time.
Maas joins former UVU soccer player Paul Hoffmeister (2016 second team), men's basketball player Holton Hunsaker (2014 second team) and baseball player Billy Burgess (2012 third team) as Utah Valley student-athletes to be named Academic All-America®.
Maas is one of 33 DI men's soccer players to receive the distinction, and is one of two players hailing from the Western Athletic Conference with Grand Canyon University graduate senior Austin Day named to the first team.
