Wolverines drop WAC opener at Seattle U, 8-5

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Drew Sims had four hits and Kade Poulsen drove in four runs but a six-run  third inning helped Seattle University to an 8-5 win over Utah Valley University in the WAC opener for both teams on Friday at Bannerwood Park.

Sims was 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Poulsen went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Mick Madsen finished with three hits including a double.

The Wolverines (3-18, 0-1 WAC) jumped ahead with a run in the second inning after Sims and Madsen had consecutive singles, both moved up on a wild pitch and then Poulsen hit a sacrifice fly to give UVU a 1-0 lead.

The Redhawks' (5-15, 1-0 WAC) six-run third was highlighted by three straight, one-out doubles as well as a three-run home run from Michael Ciancio.

Down 7-1 in the seventh, Utah Valley cut into the lead after Poulsen delivered a two-run single that plated both Sims and Madsen. Seattle got one run back with a solo home run from Justin Mazzone to make it 8-3.

The Wolverines then got an RBI single from Poulsen in the eighth that scored Michael Beltran, as well as a Sims base hit in the ninth that brought home Ryan Eastburn for the final tally.

The trio of Sims, Madsen and Poulsen combined for nine of the Wolverines' 10 hits while Mazzone led Seattle with three hits including the home run and two doubles.

Jake Prizina lasted 6.1 innings and struck out five, allowing two earned runs on six hits to earn his third win. Jake Carr struck out eight in 6.1 innings for Utah Valley but took the loss.

The three-game series continues on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT/2 p.m. PT at Bannerwood Park.
