GREELEY, Colo.—
Ryan Eastburn recorded five hits with two doubles and three RBI in an 11-10 setback to Northern Colorado in the final game of a three-game series at Jackson Field in Greeley. Despite the loss, UVU takes the series, 2-1.
Utah Valley falls to 7-23 overall and 4-5 in WAC play with the loss. Northern Colorado improved to 7-20 overall and 3-6 in league play. UVU scored its 10 runs on 21 hits while UNC recorded its 11 runs on just 12 hits. Both teams each committed one error.
Utah Valley got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning as
Pacen Hayes doubled to left and then scored as
Jake Plecas doubled to right. Plecas then crossed the plate on a
Kody Hall single to left field, giving the Wolverines an early 2-0 advantage.
With two runners on base in the top of the third inning,
Mick Madsen singled to center to load the bases for UVU with just one out. Hayes then singled to left to score both
Drew Sims and
Alexander Marco. Madsen then scored the third run of the inning after Plecas singled to right to give the Wolverines a 5-0 lead.
After Northern Colorado scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score a 5-5, Utah Valley retook the lead with a run on the top of the fourth.
Michael Beltran singled to center and then scored on a Eastburn double to left to put the Wolverines back ahead, 6-5.
UVU's Plecas singled to open the fifth inning.
Trevor Howell then reached on a fielder's choice before Hall walked to lead the bases for UVU with no outs. Eastburn doubled in his plate appearance in the fifth that scored both Hall and Plecas to extend UVU's lead to a 8-5 advantage after five innings of play.
Northern Colorado got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game, 8-8. UVU opened the top of the eighth inning with four straight hits. Eastburn singled to center, Marco singled to left, Sims singled to left, and Madsen singled to center, which resulted in both Eastburn and Marco crossing the plate to put the Wolverines back in the lead 10-8.
The Bears had a three-run inning in the bottom of the eighth after Jack Pauley hit a two-run homer to left and Jake Gitter singled to left to score Sam Leach. The three runs gave the Bears an 11-10 lead. UNC then held UVU scoreless in the top of the ninth to secure the win.
Eastern led the Wolverines at the plate, going 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Plecas went 3-for-5, while Beltran went 3-for-6. Plecas tallied two runs and two RBI.
The Wolverines used four pitchers on the day.
Walker Ramsey opened the game and went 2.0 innings with a strikeout.
Travis Parker worked 4.1 innings as he tallied four strikeouts while giving up just three runs.
Romeo Carrillo pitched an inning, giving up two hits and three runs with one strikeout.
Cole Yocum pitched 0.2 innings without giving up a run.
Utah Valley will remain in the Centennial State to take on Air Force in non-conference action on Monday and Tuesday. Monday's series opener will begin at 3 p.m. MT.
