RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Utah Valley got a 10-strikeout gem from starter
Paxton Schultz but it wasn't enough, as the Wolverines found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 pitcher's duel to drop game two to California Baptist on Saturday evening at Totman Stadium.
The junior right-hander Schultz allowed just two runs while scattering five hits and striking out double figures for the second time on the season, but two CBU runs in the fourth inning proved to be the difference.
Four Lancer pitchers combined to shutout the Wolverines led by six scoreless innings from starter Chris Burica.
UVU drops to 11-34 on the season and 7-13 in WAC play with the setback, while CBU improves to 28-18 and 13-7 in conference play after taking the first two games on the weekend to clinch the series.
Deadlocked in a scoreless tie in the fourth, the Lancers managed to break the scoreless tie thanks to a leadoff homer from Andrew Bash to take a 1-0 advantage. Two batters later, Ryan Mota then doubled and Rory Smith followed with a one-out RBI single up the middle to give CBU a 2-0 lead.
UVU's Schultz settled down from there, as he fanned two later that inning followed by striking out the side in order in the fifth and retiring the side in order in the sixth to keep it a 2-0 score.
California Baptist then again threatened in the seventh by getting two on following an error, but Schultz countered back by striking out his ninth and 10th batters of the game to send it to the eighth with his team still trailing by just two runs.
In the top of the eighth, UVU then got a leadoff walk from
Trevor Howell followed by a single from
Michael Beltran to put runners on first and second with nobody out. A pair of CBU relievers then responded, however, by retiring the next three Wolverines in order to maintain the two-run cushion.
Then in the ninth, CBU's Matt Mogollon earned the save by retiring the Wolverines in order to preserve the 2-0 shutout victory.
CBU's Burica improved to 4-1 on the year by earning the win on the mound, while Mogollon recorded his sixth save of the year after pitching the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out two. Schultz was the tough-luck loser in the contest to fall to 1-5 on the season.
Both teams recorded just five hits apiece on the day and
Kody Hall paced the Wolverines by going 2-for-3 while
Mick Madsen recorded the team's lone extra-base hit with a fourth-inning double. Five different Lancers finished with a hit apiece in the game and Bash led the team with a 1-for-4 outing after belting out the go-ahead homer in the fourth.
The Wolverines will look to salvage a game in the weekend WAC series on Sunday. Sunday's series finale is set for a 1 p.m. MT/noon PT first pitch at Totman Stadium in Riverside.
