SAN JOSE, Calif.—San Jose State headed a corner kick into the back of the net in overtime to defeat Utah Valley 1-0 on Friday night at Spartan Soccer Complex. The Wolverines will look to bounce back on Sunday at Santa Clara.
Utah Valley falls to 2-3-0 with the loss, while San Jose State improves to 2-1-2 with the win. Two of Utah Valley's three road losses this season have come in overtime.
"There were two totally different brands and philosophies of soccer played out on the pitch tonight and their (SJSU) brand won out," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "All the credit to San Jose State. They were very stingy defensively and we didn't have the final combination to break them down. We just have to be better. We'll get better, learn from this, and get ready for Santa Clara on Sunday."
San Jose State's Jamilecxth Becerra headed in a cornerkick from the left side in the 95th minute to secure the golden goal victory in overtime. Karlee Pottorff earned the assist on the score.
Utah Valley keeper
Allie Jara played 38:06 in the box before being forced to exit the game due to an injury. Jara recorded three saves in her limited time.
Saydee Bacdad played 56:58 in relief of Jara in the box, collecting one save.
Megan Sullivan recorded UVU's lone shot of the match. San Jose State tallied 12 shots, including five on frame. The Spartans had seven corner kicks to UVU's two.
Utah Valley continue road play in the Bay area as the team travels to Santa Clara on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (MT). The game will be broadcast live on the WCC Network at WCCsports.com.
