LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Utah Valley University won its fifth straight and improved on its record-setting start in a 4-2 win over Montana on Saturday at the Marucci Desert Classic. The Wolverines are now 6-1 and off to the best start in the program's NCAA Division I era. UVU will face host UNLV, winners of four straight, later today at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT.
Siena Sandoval was 2-for-3 for the Wolverines while
Jade Miller drove in two runs.
Linnah Rebolledo and
Jordan Freas also had RBIs for Utah Valley. Brook Carter went the distance, striking out a pair while allowing just one earned run (two total) on three hits.
UVU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Basia Query doubled with one out in the first and later scored on a two-out single up the middle by Rebolledo. In the second, Sandoval reached on an error,
Emery Nielson singled to short and two batters later Miller doubled both runners home to give UVU a 3-0 lead.
A sacrifice fly got Montana on the board in the fourth and the Griz added their second run in the fifth on an infield single by Kendall Curtis. Utah Valley got an insurance run in the sixth after
Peyton Prigge doubled, moved to third on a Sandoval single and later scored on a
Jaeden Barajas RBI on a fielder's choice.
