HILLSBORO, Ore. – The University of Portland used solid pitching from senior Christian Peters and a two-home run game from Hunter Montgomery to top Utah Valley University in the second game of a Friday doubleheader, 8-2, at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Â
After earning a 6-5 come-from-behind victory earlier in the day, the Pilots (5-1) scored two runs in the third inning on a two-run single from Chad Stevens to take an early 2-0 lead. UP would add three more runs in the third, as Montgomery would hit out his first of two home runs, this one a three-run shot to increase the lead for the Pilots to 5-0.Â
Â
Portland would load the bases in the fifth inning and would add two more runs, as Brett Gillas would be hit by a pitch and a wild pitch would aid Chad Stevens to score from third to make it 7-0 Pilots.Â
Â
Matt Dalke then came in relief for the Wolverines and did a nice job by allowing just three hits and one run over two and two thirds innings of work. Â
Â
The Wolverines would get on the board in the sixth, as
Mitch Moralez would reach on a base hit to left field and later score on an RBI single from
Alexander Marco to make it 7-1. The Pilots though would extend their lead in the bottom of inning to 8-1, as Montgomery would hit out his second home run of the game.Â
Â
In the eighth inning, UVU would pressure the Pilot pitching staff as Moralez would double to center to start the frame. He would score a couple of batters later as Marco would bring him home for his second RBI knock of the ballgame.Â
Â
Spenser Triplett then came in and pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth for the Wolverines, but UVU couldn't add any more runs in the ninth as it ended up falling in the nightcap by a score of 8-2.Â
Â
UVU was led offensively by Moralez who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, while the senior Marco had his first multi-hit and multi-RBI game of the year after going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Â
In his first start of the season, junior transfer Jackson Otis (0-1) suffered the defeat on the mound for UVU, while UP's Peters improved to 2-0 after giving up just one run on four hits while striking out seven over 7.0 innings of work.Â
