USAF ACADEMY, Colo./POCATELLO, Idaho – Senior
Larry Still shattered his previous school record in the pole vault by clearing 5.50m (18-00.50) to lead the way for the Utah Valley University men's and women's track & field teams over the weekend at the Air Force Team Challenge and Idaho State's Mountain States Games.
Still, who is a senior transfer for the Wolverines, not only won the men's pole vault at the Air Force Team Challenge on Friday, but his impressive height also marks the ninth-best mark in all of NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field this season as well as marks a personal record for the UVU senior.
"The Air Force meet went very well, and I can't say enough about our men's pole vaulters. Larry did it again by jumping like crazy, but right behind him were great outings from
Alex Lawrence and
Isaac Manning," head UVU coach
Scott Houle said. "Today, we also had impressive performances from
Mazzie Melaney and
Taylor Viertel in the women's mile. Overall, this weekend went really well, and we had some nice improvements to put us in a good position for the conference meet."
With the majority of UVU's track & field squads taking part at the team-scored Air Force Team Challenge at the Cadet Field House in Colorado Springs, the men's team posted a third place finish out of four teams with 92 points while the women's team finished fourth with 51 points. The host Falcons won the event on the men's side with 138 points, while Wichita State took second (129), and Long Beach State placed fourth (83). On the women's side, the Shockers won the AF Team Challenge with 131.5 points, while AFA took second (106.5), and LBSU placed third (58).
Senior jumper
Albert MacArthur too had a big meet for the UVU men's squad at Air Force by winning the triple jump and taking second in the long jump. MacArthur earned gold in the triple jump with an impressive mark of 15.03m (49-03.75). He capped his stellar meet by earning silver honors in the long jump with a leap of 7.32m (24-00.25).
In the sprints,
Aaron Johnson again paced the men's team by taking second in the 200m dash and fourth in the 60m dash. Johnson posted the silver finish in the 200m by crossing the finish line in 21.98 seconds, a new personal record. He also took fourth in the 60 with a time of 6.94.
Seth Dabb too performed well by taking fourth in the 400m with a time of 49.12, while
Jordan Daw had a personal record for the men's squad in the 60m with a solid time of 7.03. Dabb's time also marked a PR and was good enough to move him into fifth all-time in the UVU record books.
Zane Farrer and
Andre Jones had big outings for the UVU men in the hurdles by leading the way by placing third and fourth, respectively, with times of 8.18 and 8.22. The times are both PRs for Farrer and Jones and also good enough to move Farrer into third place and Jones into fifth in the UVU record books.
Behind Still's stellar mark in pole vault,
Alex Lawrence and
Isaac Manning also performed well by tying for third by both clearing 5.05m (16-06.75). The 5.05m is also good enough to tie both Lawrence and Manning in second place in the school record books.
Aiden Garnett also had a strong outing by leading the team in the high jump by placing fourth after clearing 2.05m (6-08.75), while
Josh Clark (13.70m/44-11.50) and
Kyle Routsong (14.66m/48-01.25) led the way in the throws by respectively taking seventh in the shot put and eighth in the weight throw. Clark's throw of 13.70m also marked a PR for the Wolverine.
For the women's team,
Larissa Dabb had one of the strongest performances at Air Force by taking second in the 400m with an impressive time of 57.87.
Briana Dusenberry also had an impressive showing by taking home silver medal honors in the women's high jump after clearing 1.65m (5-05.00), while
Berkley Berrett took third in the women's pole vault by clearing 3.65m (11-11.75). Dabb's time also marked a personal record and moved her into eighth in the UVU record books, while Berrett's height too mark a PR and moved her into a tie for second place in the school record books.
In the throws,
Savanna Reilly Routsong had a stellar meet by leading the way in both the shot put and the weight throw. Reilly Routsong started her day with a third-place finish in the shot put with a toss and 12.80m (42-00.00) and followed that up by placing fourth in the weight throw (15.95m/52-04.00). Her 12.80m in the shot put is a personal record and moves her into sixth place in the UVU record books.
Maddy Beyeler and Piney Peay Whittaker too recorded personal records for Utah Valley in the shot put by recording respective throws of 11.99m and 11.48m.
With the distance runners taking part at ISU's Mountain States Games on Friday and Saturday at Holt Arena,
Hannah Branch paced the women's team by winning the 3000m run with a time of 10:11.45.
Taylor Viertel also had a strong showing by placing third in the 800m run (2:17.68) and fourth in the 1-mile run (5:05.19).
Mazzie Melaney too performed well by leading the squad in the 1-mile run with a third-place finish after crossing the finish line with a solid time of 5:04.33, while
Emily Jones earned a bronze finish in the 3000m with a time of 10:14.91.
Also at ISU,
Britain Reynolds led the UVU men's team by posting a fifth-place finish in the 3000m run with a time of 8:45.37.
Lamek Keditukei was the first to cross the finish line for the Wolverine men in the 800m by taking seventh (1:55.73), while Daniel Baush led the way in the 1-mile run by taking eighth (4:21.61).
The UVU track & field teams will cap their indoor regular season by taking part at both the Weber State Invitational and Washington's Husky Classic next weekend (Feb. 13-15). The 2020 WAC Indoor Championships will then be held Feb. 28-29 at Jackson's Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho.
