SEATTLE -- The University of Washington used good pitching and a steady offensive attack to get past Utah Valley, 5-1, in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Husky Ballpark. The Huskies used seven innings of two-hit baseball and a career-high nine strikeouts from starter Jack Enger to lift Washington to a win.
Â
The Huskies (8-5) took 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Preston Viltz tripled and scored on a squeeze play with Davis Delorefice at the plate. UVU starting pitcher Booby Voortmeyer worked through the rest of the inning, limiting the damage to only the one run.
Â
Washington extended the lead in the sixth when Delorefice hit a well-placed single that ricochted off second base and out of the reach of
Mitch Moralez, allowing Noah Hsue to score.Â
Â
In the home half of the seventh, the Huskies added three insurance runs to make it 5-0. Michael Petrie had an RBI triple that scored Tommy Williams, Braiden Ward hit a sinking line drive to score Petrie and Viltz added a sacrifice fly that plated Ward.Â
Â
The Wolverines threatened in the eighth against reliever Dylan Lamb with base hits from
Jeff Arens,
Jake Berry, and
Garrett Broussard to load bases with one out.
Connor Hall got UVU on the board with a sac fly to centerfield to score Arens to make it 5-1.
Â
Enger picked up with a win to improve to (2-1) while the loss went to Voortmeyer (1-3), who lasted 5.2 innings and allowed five hits on the day.
 Â
The Wolverines and Huskies will play game 2 of the doubleheader starting around 6:10 p.m. MST/5:10 p.m PST. The second game will be a seven-inning contest. RHP
Jaxson Otis will get the start for UVU and Washington will throw RHP Logan Gerling. The game will be streamed live on Pac-12.com (Washington Live Stream-2).
