UVU drops finale, earns series split at Washington

SEATTLE – University of Washington baseball used a three-run third inning that featured an RBI double from Braiden Ward and a two-run double by Michael Petrie to break the game open and carry the Huskies to a 4-0 victory over Utah Valley University on Sunday afternoon at Husky Ballpark.

Washington (9-6) starting pitcher Stevie Emmanuels improved to 3-1 on the year after going seven scoreless innings against the Wolverines (5-12). Mason Gray (1-2) took the loss for the UVU. The Wolverines split the series with the Pac-12 Huskies who are currently receiving votes for the NCBWA top 30 poll.

The two wins in the series for UVU were both shutout victories (7-0 and 1-0) and its first wins in Seattle in the all-time series against the Huskies.

With the game scoreless in the third, the Huskies managed to piece together the three-run frame to take the lead thanks to the RBI knocks from Ward and Petrie.

The Huskies extended the lead to 4-0 in the sixth, with an RBI single from Ward. UVU reliever Nick Sims would respond by drawing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Preston Viltz to end the Washington threat.

Utah Valley would get a runner in scoring position in both the second and eighth innings. As Garrett Broussard provided a pair of one-out doubles but the Wolverines could not manage to capitalize either time.

Alexander Marco and Broussard both had two hits on the day for the Wolverines, as they Broussard went 2-for-3 and Marco finished 2-for-4. Noah Hsue went a perfect 4-for-4 from plate for the Huskies while Ward and Petrie both drove in two runs.

The Wolverines will now return to Orem to host Air Force and Boise State of the Mountain West Conference. The midweek series with Air Force is slated for a 6 p.m. MT start on Tuesday and a 1 p.m. MT first pitch on Wednesday at UCCU Ballpark. With the new doTERRA Field (turf) currently in the final stages of being installed, the midweek series could get moved to BYU's Larry H. Field in Provo. A decision for where Tuesday and Wednesday's midweek set against AFA will be played will be announced on Monday. Check back at GoUVU.com and @UVUBaseball on Twitter for updates.
